Prescription Medications - Is their any hope?

Are there any preventive medications out there for migraines/headaches that a person with low blood pressure who is on a SSRI can take?

I cannot take the commonly prescribed preventive medications (antihypertensives, ace inhibitors, Angiotensin II Inhibitors, beta blockers, tricyclic/MAOI antidepressants, etc.) because of my hypotension and SSRI usage.

Any suggestions?

Hi,

Some of the recent studies have indicated that triptans like Sumatriptan can be combined safely with SSRI. The chances of developing serotonin syndrome are much less than expected if triptans and SSRI are combined together. I would suggest you to discuss this option with your specialist and let us know if you have more questions.

Hi!  Have you tried any of the anti-epileptics?  Usually the first one that is tried is Topamax.  That helped me for awhile.  The only side effects that I had from it were some numbness and tingling in my hands and feet.  They say that is pretty normal.  I also tried Lamictal, Keppra, and Depakote.

The drug that I have found the most relief from is actually an Alzheimer's drug.  It is called Namenda.  There has been some research that has shown that it helps to prevent migraine.  When I first went on it, I went for over 3 months without so much a daily headache.  Before that I was getting some sort of headache every day with migraines 2-3X a week.  Some insurances may not pay for this as it is not marketed for this pupose.  Some docs may not know about this.  My headache specialist put me on this.  Hope this info helps.
