Radiating headache from site of old head injury

Hello,

I frequently have (like every 7-10 days) radiating headaches.

The central area of the headache is from an old head injury. The injury occurred when I was in grade 3 or 4 (around 1989-90). I am 36.5 now. The injury occurred when a heavy bamboo from a construction scaffold left standing slipped and fell on my head. I was playing nearby. There was no unconsciousness or bad external wound, just a bruise and swelling. The swelling is still very apparent and the headaches radiate from underneath it.  The headaches tentatively started in my early 20s.

But the headaches are hard to predict. Sometimes they are brought about by work stress and deadlines, sometime with long hours on the computer with work, sometime there is no apparent reasons, I have also experienced it with bad colds (sinuses blocked etc, i.e. headaches both in the forehead area with sinuses and on the top where the injury was) or even post-coitus. I have even had it if I experience very loud sounds or very bright lights, too much time out on the sun, or with irregularity with sleep and meals.

Sometimes it lasts 2-3 days as a low-level irritant, not going away with a few hours of sleep or a painkiller pill (mostly Saridon, rarely a Motrin or a Brufen 200 - I try to avoid them if a few hours of rest is doable) or sometimes it is more intense and lasts half a day and then goes away. after sleep or some rest. Sometimes low-level version headache has also vanished post-coitus. But mostly the region and pattern is same, centered from the old injury and radiating.

I did consult a neurologist about 7-8 years back, but nothing much came out of it except his suggestions for a battery of expensive tests, which I couldn't get around to doing due to work pressure. I suspect it is related to the old injury.

Recently I read about a man being given 24h after discovery of an intradural blood clot due to an old injury and it set me thinking again, that I should do something about this. If any doc or knowledgeable patient can give me some way to proceed I will be most grateful. Meanwhile, I will set up an appointment with a GP. I really don't want to suddenly be given 24h to live, even though this hasn't bedeviled my existence, a way forward for a cure would be awesome !

Hi and welcome to the Migraines & Headaches Community.

The best I can suggest is to see your doctor. Maybe there are some tests that you can afford like an MRI or CT Scan. I really don't feel comfortable giving any advice without knowing for sure if it is just migraines or something else.

Migraines are awful. I don't have an old head injury but I'm taking magnesium supplements to help with migraines.
