MIGRAINES & HEADACHES COMMUNITY
Scared.

Scared.

So I've been having a pain/tension in my neck for the past 6 weeks or so that have been causing headaches. All this started 6 weeks back when I got a bad migraine and woke up the next day with these feeligns. So I went to the doctors and they checked me out and signed it off as a pulled muscle or a pinched nerve in my neck and prescribed me to immetrex for the migraines and flexeril for the neck. She said that if I still felt the pain the next week to go back. On the following Monday I got another bad headache and went back to the doctors. The Dr. ordered a cat scan and the test came back negative. Positive for a brain but negative for any damage. The Dr. then prescribed me Vicoden and I forgot the name of the other, just a hardcore version of Advil. Here it is Friday, 3 days after my Dr.s visit and I get a call saying that after review the Dr. noticed I have a cyst in my brain. The nurse said the location but I didn't have a pen on me to write it down. The Dr. had already left so I could only get info from the nurse. She said it wasn't an emergency otherwise I would of already been in there getting an MRI, but that I do need to get an MRI within 2 weeks. She told me it's 8mm big. Now, I'm freaking out. I'm still getting these tension headaches that the Dr.s can't raelly put their thumbs on other then that it might be a neck strain, and through some thumbing through, I've read that a cyst in the brain can cause headaches. So I'm freaking out... Can anyone help me out? Share some info, stories if they know anyone or went through/have the same thing... I'm waiting for the Dr. office to call back so I can schedule my MRI but the nurse said it may take a week. And, I can't get ahold of my doctor cause she has already gone on her holiday vacation. Please, any info will be muchly appreciated. Thanks. Happy holidays!

Hi,

Cysts are sphere filled with fluid, blood, minerals or tissue. Most of the time brain cysts are benign, although sometimes they can occur in part of brain that controls the vital function, and very rarely inside brain tumors.
The brain cysts can be of many kinds depending upon the location- arachnoid, colloid, pineal cysts, dermoid and epidermoid.
I would like to ask you if you have any other symptoms apart from headache?
Most of the time the cysts are asymptomatic although in some cases they can produce headaches, difficulty in walking, brief interruption of consciousness etc.
Since the cysts are most commonly seen as an incidental finding like in your case, they are often left untreated if they are not producing any symptom. The doctor usually opts for a repeat MRI after few months to see if the cyst if growing in size. In case the cyst is increasing in size or producing pressure symptoms, surgical removal or decompression of the cyst is done.
I would suggest you to speak to the nurse once again and try to find out where exactly is the cyst, then i can give you a more specific answer.
Meanwhile please relax, most of the times the cysts are benign and treatable. Merry Christmas!
