Severe Headache caused by blood pressure tablets?

Severe Headache caused by blood pressure tablets?

Hi, my mother has just started taking amlodipine for high blood pressure (her reading is very high at 210/120)
She took the first one around 24 hours ago but has developed a SEVERE headache and cannot tolerate bright lights(so may be a migraine)
Should she stop taking the tablets or is this a common side effect of the drug?
Will it go away on its own if she carries on taking the tablets?
She also feels weak and a little nausea.
Is she at risk of a stroke anytime if she stops taking the tablets with such a high reading of 210/120?
Thanks you.

Hi, How is your mother feeling now, You have not mentioned who has prescribed the blood pressure tablet. Usually for this reading of blood pressure one needs to ger complete bed rest along with medications hence hospitalisation is advised. For sure if her severe headache is due to taking tablet alone you can call your attending doctor and seek immediate intervention. How old is she and how long she is having blood pressure and was it controlled. Please keep monitoring her blood pressure and consult your doctor soon.
Bye.

The blood pressure tablets were prescribed by her doctor. She is 60 and the first time she found out about her high blood pressure was last monday. (the reading then was 180/110)
She took her first tablet yesterday. She's decided not to take any more, her headache is still bad and she will be visiting the doctor on monday and hopefully be prescribed something else.
Is there any blood pressure tablets that cause less side effects you know of?
I don 't want her to go through this again!
Thank you for the info and quick response, is much appreciated!

This blood pressure med has a side effect of headache.  With blood pressure that high I would call her prescribing doctor.  There are like 20 meds that can help blood pressure and right now you don't know if the headache is from the BP or the med.

Hi,

The headache your mother has could be due to the high blood pressure and also as a side effect of the medication.

But is situations where the blood pressure is so high, the patient is usually kept under observation and medications given to bring the blood pressure to normal under constant supervision.

Get her blood pressure checked again and if it is still high, you should talk to your doctor if she needs to be hospitalized and also ask about a change of medication.

Do let us know if you have any doubts and keep us posted on how she doing.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.
