Strange headache after alchohol

Strange headache after alchohol

Hi, just need a bit of advice if anyone could.

I went out last friday and drunk a hell of a lot (talking a bottle of vodka, most i've ever drunk, i'm so stupid sometimes, quitting drinking now). I woke up the next day with a kind of typical hangover, head throbbing, hurts more when i move my head, not feeling sick though but also had some ringing in my ears which i've still got. My neck was also hurting (not typical) sort of quite painful like it was hard to lift my head, fairly sure nothing happened that could have caused it (knocks or bangs or anything). I just figured it'd clear up, it's now thursday the week after, the headache took 3 days to go away, as did the stiff/sore neck. I'm just left with what feels like a tension headache now (round the sides of my head and a little on the top, just pressure really, not painful, throbs a little sometimes) and the ringing in the ears is still there (but only noticable at night really).

It will get worse if i run or whatever much like a hangover but this is now 6 days later. I went to the doctors yesterday and he said that the tension headache was most likely due to exaustion or the alchohol i consumed itself and the ringing in the ears is probably caused by that amount of alchohol causing electrolyte imbalences. I just want some confirmation that this sounds right, he said that it would probably go away soon but to come back and see him if it doesn't and i'm not sure what to think. It does get worse at night or when i am tired, it seems like the pressure gets worse.

I have had no vision distortion or anything like that. No numb limbs or anything else that i have really noticed. I'm on a fair few meds but mainly for my acid reflux disorder, nothing i can't drink with or has side effects listed like those i just described, if someone could offer some advice then i would be so very greatful. Thanks.

Hi,

This may be something which will spontaneously resolve. You have posted that prior to the onset of the headaches , you had taken an increased quantity of alcohol. This may still be an effect of the alcoholic intake.

I suggest that you continue to observe your symptoms. If there is any improvement in the following week then this may be something that does not require any further evaluation. If the pain increased, if there is any associated visual conditions, vomiting, loss of balance and weakness, then a prompt consult is necessary.

Have you had similar bouts of headaches before?

No, not at all. Nothing like this, i get the odd tension headache every now and again but that's about it. It will be 7 days tonight since i drank the alchohol and it does still feel a bit like a hangover but i'm just concerned about the ringing in my ears, doesn't seem normal to me, it is definatly not getting worse (at the moment anyway) but doesn't seem to be improving either.

Sounds like you have tinnitus and you probably never noticed it until now.  I have it and only realize it when i pay attention to the ringing, the rest of the time it never bothers me.  When i drink (not often) its really bad.

I probably do cause i always get ringing in my ears when i drink (well, with the hangover anyway) but it's never been this loud before, it's stopping me sleeping. I wouldn't be so concerned but also my neck (sort of opposite to where my mouth is on front of face) is aching quite a lot, specially in the mornings (which is obvious really with neck ache) and i have noticed that in one ear sometimes there is like a banging, really fast, like the muscles are twitching, not quite sure what that is about but it's pretty disconcerting. Since the headaches have gone away i'm fairly sure the rest will just subside again so maybe this will all be alright.
