Welcome to the Migraine and Headaches Forum! This forum is for questions and support regarding migraine and headache issues such as: abdominal
migraines, headaches caused by allergies, cluster headaches,
headaches, headaches in children, migraine headaches, sinus headaches, tension headaches, visual disturbances.
I have been told that I have had an episode of Transverse Myelitis that has possibly re-occured, so I am being monitored and under the care of an excellent neurologist. I do sometimes experience some burning on the right hand side of my face and tongue numbness. On occasions the tongue numbness is really bad but usually not long lasting but of late often my tongue on the underneath but just feels numb or like pressure or tight sensation. When this occurs I seem to have some type of head pain but more like a random shooting pain. I do sometimes get vertigo with my headaches as well and on occasion I have vomited when I have had had a headache at the back of my head (base) near neck. I find all this seems to be worse when I am experiencing a flare of my other symptoms
When I discussed this with my neurologist (at that stage I had only experienced one episode of tongue numbness) ,he said it was migraine, I rarely get headaches that cause pain or require medication, I am not sensitive to light, noise etc. I am currently taking Gabapentin 900mg per day for nerve pain, pins and needles, burning etc.
Is there anyway I can prevent this type of migraine from happening as the tongue numbness is happening more frequently in the absence of any real head pain? But sometimes I do get some pain.. I hope this is making sense. There has only been two occasions where the tongue numbness has been severe enough to prevent me from talking. My symptoms can occur both sides but left leg is always worse.
So why am I getting migraines? Are the migraines part of the TM? Or could this be new activity? My initial symptoms didn't ever involve headache that I was aware of but I do wonder now that perhaps everything is just migraine aura, especially when my repeated MRI are normal, NCS, bloods, LP etc.
The tongue thing is happening more often (tightness or funny feeling on underside of tongue.
Can I prevent them?
Is the tongue numbness something to be concerned about?
Thank you in advance for hopefully answering my question.
By the way I reside in Australia.
Cheers,
Udkas.
I assume I am suffering from a form of migraine?
Is there anyway I can prevent this migraine?
It has lasted now for about 3 weeks (maybe longer) so is this migraine?
My neuro thought that my migraines was prob caused by lesion in brainstem?
I wonder because nothing has shown up on tests that it all could just be migraine, I know what I have at the moment feels like migraine.
Do migraines normally last this long with weakness etc., they are quite scary you feel like you are having a stroke. THe only reason why I assume it's migraine is the visual disturbances I have been having..
Can migraines cause you to have an abnormal neurological exam?
Thanks in anticipation of a reply.
A neuro might prescribe a stint of prednisone or valproic acid to see if that helps. In my case, the former worked, but the latter did not.
I hope things clear up for you.
