Topamax side effects I really need some input please...

Hi, I'm new to this forum below I have copied and pasted a post that I placed on another site yesterday. I tried to edit it in word but I lost the edited version and I need to go get my son from daycare in a few minutes, so I must apologize, my mental state yesterday was pretty muddled.  I am still not exactly at my best today but I am somewhat better.
Anyway, if anyone that has the time and the patience to read through the post below and the comments that I have added at the bottom and could offer any suggestions, I would certainly appreciate it.

Thanks

OK, I have been having migraines for years off and on but nothing to get to excited about I never gotten them frequently enough that I was very concerned about it until recently. A few months ago I started having migraines more often like two or three a month and they just got closer and closer and closer together until it was like almost a daily thing. I have also had what appear to be cluster headaches they started about four years ago although I didn't even recognize them until very recently, now that has certainly raised the bar for the worst pain that I have ever felt!!! It used to be induced labor, but the last three headaches that sent me up to the emergency room, blew that right out of the water. Anyway I am rambling.

To get to point here, I started taking Topamax about 10 days ago (obviously to avoid the headaches) I have tapered up to 100 mg/QD. I only take it night. It seems to be working, I have only had one headache, to speak of, so far and it was pretty mild in comparison.  I mean I've had a few minor tension headaches, but nothing that really even warrants whining about. I even seem to be a little more optimistic than usual about the general state of... everything I guess, which I think is pretty cool (see what I mean).
Up until three days ago I was quite happy with the Topamax. Virtually no headaches, a HUGE plus.  A little bit more positive outlook things, that never hurts.  Of course, I've started to drop some weight, from what I've read that is a very common effect.  That’s a big plus for me since I've battled it since about the sixth grade up until I was 21 and started using meth, I quit that four years ago. By the way, quitting, in my opinion, was not that hard.  I would urge anyone that thinks they can't do it to just give it a try. I would have quit a long time before I did if known it be so easy. OK I'm straying from the point again sorry about that.
So three days ago I started, very suddenly, to feel very fatigued and also achy. The achiness isn't like a general soreness in my muscles but more like in my bones and joint tissue and only happens when I use them. For instance, when I walk up or down the stairs, my legs will hurt deep like in the bone and in the hip joint or when I clean off the counters my arms will ache and my wrists.  If I spend any length of time with my spine bent at any angle or arms upward or  forward/outward position, my spine will ache for anywhere from fifteen to forty-five afterward. The pain usually lasts for about five minutes or so in my upper extremities, usually about two minutes or less in my legs.   The intensity of the pain is only moderate maybe a five or six on a pain scale.
The fatigue, however, is much more intense. I mean it really takes just about every drop of motivation that I can muster up just to perform a simple mundane task like folding the laundry or tidying up the kitchen the fact that it is also physically painful to do these things doesn’t add to their appeal.
The other thing that has started happening over the past three days is that the other medication that I take, Adderall, for ADD (40mg/BID) seems to have little, if any effect at all. As you can tell by the way I keep losing track of what I am what I am talking about and going on tangent about, ahem…
The symptoms seem to start around 10:00 or 11:00 in the morning which I find strange since I only take the Topamax at night. Unless the reason that I’m having the side effects is because the medication wearing off or even better yet, these aren’t side effects but something totally different! The symptoms kinda come in waves from what I can see so far, they last pretty much all day long. I dunno, at first I was thinking, or hoping, maybe I was catching the flu or something, but since I have like no other symptoms of the flu I don’t think that is the problem. Maybe I tapered up to my current dose I’m on too quickly? If I had to choose between one or the other I would take my current set of symptoms over the headaches without any hesitation, but it is rather inconvenient.
I have an appointment with my Dr. on the 30th and as soon as I post this I’m going to see if I can bump that up a bit but he may not be back in town until then (he’s not a permanent resident here).
I will withhold my location for now so as not offend anyone. The medical community where I live, well, let us just say it leaves a lot to be desired. And it is about 120 miles to a decent emergency room, maybe 80; I haven’t checked all of them out lately. If I didn’t have a three year old son and weren’t a single parent, I would have made that trip on a few occasions, it’s that bad here.
So on that note, I would really love to hear from anyone who has experienced similar symptoms while taking Topamax and I would also love to know if no one has ever had effects like this all while taking it (actually I would rather hear that). I could also use a good joke or two.

... ok if you made it through that... bless you.

Since then I took it upon myself to decrease the Topamax from 100mg/QD to 50mg/QD last night and I do feel better, quite a bit better.  from what I can understand  most people don't taper up to that dosage nearly that fast. I am, on the other hand, in the process of developing a rather nasty headache right now as I'm typing this. I don't think its going to develop into anything to severe though, oh I probably shouldn't have said that, like tempting fate... oh well.
OK my other concern is that I don't have any kind of an abortive prescribed at this time. just Lortab APA 10/325 whih takes the edge off of the minor ones if I take 5 or 6 of them.  You see there is no Neuro where I live and don't have insurance, don't qualify for assistance yada yada yada. I'm not asking for medical advice mind you but I would like to know what works for some other people.
. I moved my appointment up to this Thursday (thank heavens) and I would like to be able to give my Dr. a few suggestions when I go in.
Anyway, Thanks for your time and I'm so sorry this post is so long, usually I do try to keep things short and to the point.

Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum.  I would suggest you open a new thread up rather than use an old one in the future, but I'll help you out here anyway. :-)

Topamax, depending on the dose, if you have a history of kidney disease, and how long you have been on it, should clear your system within a week or less.

Drink plenty of water.  Did you doctor give you a different medication to replace this?  If so, what is the name of the medication?

Are you taking any other medications since they could have interacted with Topamax?

If you are still having problem by the next business day, notify your doctor,

Can I ask if your topamax side effects ever went away after stopping? I sound just like you. I recently stopped it (50mg at bedtime) and it's been about 2.5 days and I'm wondering how long until I feel normal?

Hi, I have been on verapamil but found my hair thinned over 7 months. I then insisted on a medicine that does not thin hair, as it seem that most migraine meds are cal. chan. blockers which do affect blood flow, and thus constrict flow to follicles. I was told to try topamax but read in many blogs that hair fell out in clumps even months later after stopping the drug. I am now on gabentin which acts on the nerves and not the blood flow, but it has the side effect of weight gain and congestive heart failure. Does anyone know or heard of meds that don't affect hair? I have ocular migraines, which make me sensitive to fluroscent light. They also cause me to be very sleepy during the day.

I started Topamax 8/27 and stopped it the day before yesterday.  It was awful.  Why don't the doctors tell us these things.  I had these terrible internal vibrations all through out my body, my anxietys went up, I felt confused, I thought I was losing my mind.  I still don't feel very good.  I'm a bit shaky today and Im wondering how long it will take to get out of my system.  I didn't just stop it by myself.  I called my neurologist and I they said to just stop it.  I started with 25mg at bedtime and then a week later upped that to 50mg at bedtime.  I did that for about 2 weeks.  This has been the worse 3, almost 4 weeks of my life.  I rather have the migrains!

oh my gosh, i am up to 100 mg a day on topamax and i am in a fog, hate the taste in my mouth, cannot remember things, all i want to do is sleep.  I am a big tennis player, love to exercise and I have absolutely no interest or energy, my joints ache, my chest feels like someone is sitting on it.  I have sufferred from migraines since I was 7, I  am 43, and I honestly would rather have a migraine 3-5 x a month than this.  I have been on it for a month and have put a call in to my neuro to see if i can stop or cut down to 50 mg.  as of today i have not taken any since yesterday a.m. and dont plan to take any until i speak to him.  also, how long does it take to get this out of your system?

yep - i have gotten those side effects.  they suck, but it was worth it for me since i am migraine free after taking topomax.  i can't believe it since i got them for years.  if you have some side effect questions call this number - they will hopefully help.  i used it when i was having some side effects and was worried and my doc didn't help me but i wanted to get rid of the migraines.  good luck.  oh - it took about a month or two for the side effects to diminish.  give it some time and you will really be happy.

Just call 1-877-YES-YOU-CAN (1-877-937-9682) to speak with friendly and knowledgeable healhcare professionals. The call is free and so is the information. Our extended hours are Monday to Friday, 9 am to 8 pm EST.

I know a little about Topamax, I've been taking it off and on mostly for about two or three years.  I take 100mg once a day, used to be twice a day, but I started getting mentally foggy, and forgetting little things, it was annoying, especially when I was still in school.  I haven't heard of the other symptoms except the weight loss, which I have experienced too.  I don't mind that either!!  I would definitly talk to your doctor about it.  I also take Neurontin 300mg, tid, at least, and it seems to help, but I'm coming off of Methadone, bad drug, that I wish I had never started.  My old doctor talked me into it, and then after I got another script from someone else, he dumped me, and just made me get off of it by myself.  Creep!  So, I'm dealing with that, plus the headaches which are coming back.  Good luck at the doctor, and let me know what happens.  Wish I could take the Topamax twice a day, but I just get really clueless.  It's sad!!  Take care!!!  And, know there are people like you out there.  I've been suffering from these monster headaches since I was 7, and I'm in my late 30's now.  I'm trying to figure out where to go next, another Neurologist, a pain doctor, or what?  Unfortunately, only pain meds help me get rid of a major headache, so most docs don't want to prescribe that kind of stuff to me, or anyone anymore :0

Topamax was a nightmare for me.  I began medical school on 300 mg/day!  I couldn't figure out why I couldn't concentrate or remember anything...much less finish a sentence.  I didn't lose weight on Topamax, but gained when I came off. I finally realized Topamax was my problem, went off of it, and I felt like I had come out of a cloud.  I had to take a medical leave from school to get my headaches lined out.  I can have 5 a week unmedicated.  Talk about wanting to kill a DR!  I wanted to send him my 25000 tuition bill.  Anyway, now I take Keppra and it's not perfect, but no side effects.  Also, Relpax is my savior.  It gets rid of my headache ASAP.  I have no info on the weight loss post regarding Relpax though.  Anyway, you guys aren't alone they don't call it "dopeamax" for nothing. I just wish Neuros wouldn't use it as first line treatment when it's so hard on people.

No Way!!!  Ask your Dr for any test you want!  You arent being too dramatic...I always thought I was too, but you can only take so much.  That constant pain drives you crazy!  I used to get it day after day and night after night...CONSTANT!! The MRI was the first test I had and asked for.
Let me know how it goes...Good Luck...I mean it.  Good luck too on finding a new Neuro.

My neuroligists put me on Topamax and I could not tell you what symptoms what I had from taking the Topamax.....BECAUSE I DO NOT REMEBER A THING.  It KNOCKED me out of this world.  I went into work and was asked to leave because I was so drowsy, words slurred and could not think or talk straight.  I told them of the medication and was told not to come back until the meds was out of my system.  After that day I do not remeber at least 3 days.....So needless to say I am not taking the Topama anymore.

Dr. Dickoff???  Thats hysterical:)  I don't really know if Relpax helps you lose weight, but I will say that I have lost lots of weight!  I dont know if it was because of all the meds together or just me watching what I was eating or even both.  I dont thik it will make you gain any weight.  You only take it when you need it, not every day, and like I said, it has been wonderful for me!  Dont forget to ask your Dr. about trying the Topamax on the 25mg dose and them decide how you feel while taking that.  If you still feel the weeping, pinching and all the other annoying stuff then try taking if every other day.  I did that too in the beginning until I felt more comfortable.
I know those side affects suck, but I have been taking it for over a year and I think if I were to go off it totally then the headaches would come back more frequently. I do know that you cannot just stop taking the topamax just like that for good, lower your dose little by little week by week and then off, if you've been taking it for a while. Let me know what your Dr. says about the 25mg along with the Relpax, but if the side affects keep happening on the Topamaxat that dose I am so sorry:(...

my new best buddies lol ;] who confirm my symptoms are real and I am not crazy yippie :) I will ask Doc about Relpax and Topamax I swear when I was up to like 75 mlgs it was like an all in one everything , prevented anxiety but gave me mood swings took the edge off head aches but gave me pinching aye, aye aye Today after all week un pms related of weeping snapping pinching I just said F topamx n didn't take anything today only and I swear I can think I am not to moody I haven'ty any pinching and no aniety go figure, I have a slight lil headache  but not the usual map quest one I often have
Does Relpax help with weight loss? I;m a lil chuny and if I could get a bonus of weight reduction I won't complain
Do you think its possible if on topmax to long it just stops working? Like I went off in April or a little before and then it was like hello 30lbs or more creept up and so Dr andI swear on everything I love I am not making fun of him or makiking his name up, or being mean but Dr.Dickoff , yes I know you are laughing , but that's really my neurologists name I swear, but anywho he swears it was because I just stoped topamax that I gained weight
So he but me up to 75 and now I'm down to 50 and like I said today I took none and feel good!

I am SO SORRY!! I know exactly how you feel!!  At times my pain gets really really bad...but the RELPAX 40mg works great and I DO NOT take it on the onset like it says (even though it says to).  It has does great for me.  The Maxalt did nothing for me and they put me on so many things and nothing else worked, but everyone is different...anyway, I take the topamax at night because in the beginning I wasnt sleeping well so I would take it at night since I was and still am taking synthroid for my underactive thyroid in the morning.  I have been doing it for awhile and I just got used to taking it.  I take so much at night that I just pop it in and dont even think about it. About what Kwiwi stated...the hateful emotion, that happened a bit along with the crying and not acting myself while being on the 125mg.  If you do not get rid of the side effects after the Dr keeps adjusting your doses than try something else.  You should have your Dr even lower your dose to 25mg and try the Relpax and see what happens.  The foggyness and tiredness may go away...Good Luck!!

I used to take Topomax too.  It did the tingling, the brain fogginess and most of the other things people are describing on this website.  But that wasnt the worst.  I became very hateful.  I didnt care at all for that side effect.  The doc tried giving me some anti depressant and the Maxalt and I decided it wasnt worth take so many pills.  I put up with the headaches that I get now.  But I am happier with myself and I feel more in control...

thanks~ my Neuro is  a jerk  seeking new one he won't give me anything  but 50 mg of topamx I was up to 75 but topamax is weird it causes brain foggyness.... I still get the tingles and numbesss...tired is my middlename and so is boowho sue... I feel like my brain has mapquest and navigates to the left, right, center, to my neck, eyeball, you name it I HATE HATE, HATE that pinching sensation, in the brain I was on zoloft and it sucks poor sexual side effects:( I take just Welburtion (sp) and Topamax I have Maxalt as a PRN for breakthoughs...I feel like my brain is mush... It's like my collage 4.0 is know a no.0
At 32, not married and no kids :( I'm falling apart! My head hurts so much I swore I was  Godforbide going to have an anneuriusm or a thunerclap headache
Deep sigh
Anyway , I did drop some lbs on Topamax but I don't know I've gained it back and haven't lost since but thts a whole nother story , because I swear my MD won't test me for Pollysystic Ovary and  I have only middrift weight gain and I can feel pain in my ovaries if that makes sence? Sucks I think they think I am a hypocondriacte because I was once diagnosed w/ ANxiety from PTSD and Panic attacks,. this maybe so but I am not crazy, well maybe a lille because every night I fall to tears praying  not to die from headaches or an anneurisum!
Do you only take Topamax at night and if so why? do you find you have better results taht way? Thanks for your help

I have been on Topamax for over a year and when I started I did feel very tired and also like a zombey...that was when I was on 125mg!!!  I also felt the tingles in my hands and on the bottom of my feet.  I also cried at the drop of a hat...no body wanted to even talk to me, (crazy)...the Dr. then puts me on Zoloft:) Anyway, he lowered it to 100mg and I have been on that ever since and it has worked for me.  I have felt the tingling often until I adjusted though.  You get used to it and accept that it is a side affect.  I lost lots of weight and the Dr prescribed Relpax which is WONDERFUL and it works for those nasty headaches that just show up out of no where.  Ask the Dr about that.  I take lots of meds so it shouldn't affect anything that you may take.  I really hope this helps you, if you have any other questions let me know.  Just to let you know I do take the Topamax at night as well and always have, so keep doing that too.
