I started Topomax about 6 weeks ago at 25 mg. at bedtime, and since I wanted to get as much relief as possible from my migraines each month (i.e. not have so many) I recently asked my Dr. if I could increase my dose to 50mg. For the first 9 days on the 50 mg dose at bedtime, I didn't notice anything very different, but by the 10th day I noticed that even if I was tired by bedtime, once I took the dose and got into bed, I would be wide awake and could not fall asleep for hours. I spoke with my doctor, and he said I can go back down to 25mg/day. Now I am thinking I am going to take it in the early evening instead of right before bed and see what happens.
Immediately upon starting topamax I was an insomniac...I did not sleep at all for 4 full days and nights...was not one bit tired either...had to stop as it did nothing for headaches anyway...this drug must offer huge commission to doctors who prescribe it
I'm sorry to hear of your problems. Usually Topamax is tapered slowly, but if you were only on it for 10 days this may explain why your doctor took you off it all of a sudden. Anxiety and insomnia are common when stopping the medication. The decreased appetite is usually when you are taking the medication.
If you are feeling suicidal, call you local suicide prevention hotline immediately since this can be a side effect. If you feel unsafe to yourself, call 911 or an ambulance. If the symptoms are not as severe, you still need to notify your doctor of the side effects. Let us know how you do.
