hi there. some women get really bad headaches around their periods. sometimes it's tension headaches and sometimes it's migraines. i get very serious migraines around my period, so i can totally sympathize with you.

i would suggest going to the doctor to check if these might be menstrual migraines... as severe headaches around a woman's period are probably menstrual migraines...

if they ARE... you could try (as long as you are not already taking any hormones, like birth control) taking estrogen for the week of your period. that has really helped me.

also, if they are migraines, you should be using triptans, that's actual migraine medication, to stop the migraines. pain killers are good if the triptans don't work... but, they should not be your first line of defense against migraine pain!! triptans should be the medication you are taking for migraines, if they are migraines... triptan actually interrupt the physiology of a migraine and STOP a migraine entirely... a pain killer won't stop the migraine, it will only help with the pain side of the migraine, and when it wears off, if you still have the migraine, you'll still be in pain. i personally take zomig nasal spray, but there are LOTs of triptans on the market, if you have migraines, discuss with your doctor which triptan is right for you.

also, magnsium is great to help not only with headaches, but also with any cramping during your period!! so, i'd suggest taking magnesium during your period... at least 400mg a day. don't over-dose on the stuff tho', because it can upset your stomach. start with 400mg a day and see how that goes (it might not work RIGHT away... give it at least one monthly cycle before making a decision on it)... then ask the pharmacist or your doctor how much more you can safely take per day and they'll let you know. :)
