melatonin

I have read that melatonin supplement may help Hemicrania continua. Does it mean that the body may not be producing this natural hormone? Is there any relationship between HC and hormonal problems? How about HC and allergies?

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
Hemicrania continua respond to Indmethacin. Long term use of indomethacin can result in gastrointestinal adverse effects. Melatonin is a hormone secreted by pineal gland and is very similar in chemical structure to indomethacin without the risk of gastro intestinal side effects. That’s the reason melatonin is now being considered as an effective treatment option.
Patients with history of severe allergies are advised not to take melatonin in general.
