migraine

My mum is 60 years old.  For the past 6 years she has been getting this dizzy spells followed by vomiting and followed by really bad headaches which last for up to two days.  The problem is that she will suffer this when she changes from one tempreature to another like if she is nice and cozy in the living room and she goes to  the window she will have a major dizzy spell, vomiting and headache.  Could you please help me, I have taken my mother to every doctor i know and they can not find a cure and she is really worried about this.  I know it can sound a bit strange but she is loosing all quality of life.  Please help.

Hi,

I suggest that you mom seek consult with an ENT specialist just to rule out involvement of the ears, nasal passages and sinuses. An inner ear problem may cause dizziness or vertigo. A CT scan will help rule out any intracranial disorder . Decreased blood flow to the base of the brain may cause dizziness.

Were previous scans done?

Any underlying problems like hypertension ( anti hypertensive medications may cause  BP to drop when not monitored closely), diabetes, vision problems, nutrition problems?

Thank you Vanessa,  I should have said that my mum has already been done a CT scan of head and ears and has seen an ENT on several occasions, she has seen a dietician and is closely monitered by her GP.  You see she also has high blood pressure and thyroid which is looked by her GP.  That so far is controlled, my problem is why the change of climate for her to get an episode.  She is really upset because all the doctors keep telling her it is in her mind but shes not crazy she even went through a phase of depression but which was looked after too, I know my mum but i do not know what to do now.  Is there any migrane (migraine) that would be affected by change in climate and give u vomiting and dizziness before the headache.  Sorry for keeping at it but i do need help.  I am running out of ideas and resources and my mum is still young to be housebound like she has been.  Thank you

Hi,

Given that she has been properly assessed and her underlying thyroid disorder and blood pressure are well controlled, then this may sound like a bout of migraine headaches. However, thyroid problems and even medications may sometimes present with headaches. It is best that she is being monitored closely.

Migraines may be associated with weather change however this is not firmly established. Nausea and vomiting may also be associated with migraines.

Provide your mom proper protection during extreme changes in temperature if this has ben triggering her headaches.
