migraines

My nephew who is a 12 yr old male- has had some problems with migraines in the past however for the past four weeks he will eat a meal ( or light snack) and within 30 min or less vomit the food. He has had the upper GI series- x-rays and Cat scan with no indication of a problem. He has not lost weight and his electrolytes are good. We would greatly appreciate any assistance on this.
Thank you.

Hi,

Does he have any other symptom like fever, chills, abdominal pain or bloating?
Also please make sure he is not under any kind of emotional stress or unduly anxious for some reason.
There can be multiple possibilities like delayed stomach emptying, gastric outlet obstruction, decreased stomach distensibility, irritable bowel syndrome, gastroenteritis or an eating disorder.
Have all these causes been excluded? Please let me know.

Justin does have vomiting 30 to 40 minutes after he eats and he has constant nausea throughout the day.  Since Friday he's had severe migraines with all of the above. He has loss some weight, but not a tremendous amount.  He does not have a fever, sweats, chills or cold symptoms.  He does have a pain in his stomach which he describes as a twisty, knotty like feeling.  He's had an upper-GI, lower intestine check and an c-scan which have all come back normal.
We look forward to any help on this for him- thank you

Hi,

Well migraine explains all his symptoms. Migraine is preceded by a premonitary or postdromal phase where children experience anorexia, nausea, sometimes vomiting, loss of appetite, distaste for food.
During the migraine attack, it is common for nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain to occur.
Since his GI investigations are clear, i think there is nothing to worry on that front. But he needs to be seen by a pain specialist or his pediatrician as he needs medication for migraine. At the same time please try and identify the trigger for his migraine, in children mostly it is a food product like MSG, aged cheese, chocolates, hot dogs, bacon, cured meats, lima beans etc.Good luck!
