migraines

I have had migraines for over 30 years (without aura) but now I am experiencing a new symptom.  On my right hand side it feels tight and tingles - just very funny.  It isn't an aura as I do not get a migraine with it.  It almost feels as if I have gone to the dentist.  I am taking topamax - 350mg daily and have been for years.  I am too afraid to go off the topamax as it does work for me.  I am considering botox (if it is the topamax causing it).  Any suggestions?  Thank you.

Hi,
How are you? Are there other symptoms present? Migraine symptoms are indeed unique to each individual and very unpredictable. This could be due to a subtype type of migraine, hemiplegic migraine, which presents with any of the following: pins-and-needles feeling in the arm, numbness on one side of the body, weakness on one side of your body; or loss of balance and coordination. Although this type occurs in people with aura, this condition has a genetic component. If it persists, it is best that you have this checked by your doctor or be referred to a neurologist for proper management and to rule out other neurological issues that may be responsible. Genetic testing may rule out hemiplegic migraine. Like all migraines, both preventive and abortive medications may help. Take care and do keep us posted.
