ocular migraine

by DeeDee1968, Sep 23, 2009 11:00AM
I have been suffering with "episodes" where out of the blue I experience blurred vision, double vision and temp loss of my field of vision my first episode started about 20 yrs ago after the birth of my  first child. I have had many "episodes" over the last 20 years. I am so scared by them, they can last anywhere from 30 min to over an hour the last time this episode happened my vision took nearly 2.5 hours to come back.
I have been waking up everyday with a headache I believe it to be tension and I have GAD so this doesnt help.
My question is has anyone found any info on how to avoid it? My Dr. says to take 800 mg of ibuprophen when it occurs. Well it didnt help the last episode.
I am in CONSTANT fear of it happening when I am alone or at the store or at work. It is debilitating there is NO WAY I could drive myself home.

Triptans work better than 800mg of advil. Ask your doctor about a prescription for triptans. Triptans can stop the aura, the occular migraine.

If you have had a workup by a neurologist and it is only migraine with aura then start taking magnesium glycinate 200mg 3 times a day or 250 mg twice a day. I have not had a headache since I started over four months ago. Keep in mind that for the first month or two you might get a headache or two until it starts to work.

Hi
Welcome to the forum!
What you are experiencing are probably not the typical ophthalmic migraines commonly called as ocular migraines, since these only cause visual symptoms without headaches.
What you have is probably a visual aura of the actual migraines. The ocular symptoms can precede or accompany a migraine.
The other possibility is a retinal migraine. This can cause repeated episodes diminished vision or blindness. This may precede or accompany a headache.
There are many medications available, both to decrease the visual symptoms and to decrease the intensity and frequency of pain. These headaches should be treated by an experienced neurologist. You may also need to consult an eye specialist.
Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!
