one pupil dilated, other is not

hi my friend has a history of migraines with some aura and black spots. friday she felt like something was in her eye, and noticed that one pupil was dilated and the other was not. she went to the er and they tested her for glaucoma. they wanted her to stay so they could watch her but the cost was prohibitive. they didnt really find out anything. she was worried about an aneurysm. has anyone heard of a single dilated pupil as being a symptom of a migraine?

I have the exact same thing.  Only one of my pupils dilate when I have a migraine.  I went to 2 neurologists and the first one couldn't figure it out.  The second one told me it is a rare but benign occurrence that he had only seen in medical school.  I haven't worried about it for years but now my eye doctor wants to do some more tests because he is not sure it is related to migraine.  Additionally, I also had migraines for over a year that prevented me from working.  It started with 3 really bad migraines.  I thought I was having a stroke.  I was confused, slurred my words, and was unable to figure out a spreadsheet I had just spent the previous day working on.  After the 3rd one I was unable to work at all.  My doctor told me they were just migraines.  One day during a migraine a nurse noticed that my right pupil was dilated.  It stayed that way for over a month.  I went to numerous doctors until that one neurologists recognized it for what it was, a rare but benign variant of a migraine.  It is back to normal size now but I can tell when I am going to have a headache because it is like a warning sign.  I hope this helps.

Hi,

Eyegraine is like migraine of eyes. It is usually associated with pain in the eyes.
Has she been prescribed medications for it?

Hi,

Thanks for writing in.
One sided dilated pupil is seen in glaucoma as rightly mentioned. One sided dilated pupil usually does not occur in migraine.
Is she taking migraine medications? Migraine preventive medications like Amitryptyline and Nor Triptyline can result in one sided dilated pupil if there is an allergic reaction.
Hope this helps!
