slightly elevated wbc
just wondering if stress can make white blood count go up.  I had a slightly elevated wbc.  It was 12.8 and all other blood work was fine.  Only symptoms are headaches?  Can it be up with nothing major going on?

Hi

An elevated number of white blood cells is called leukocytosis. This can result from bacterial infections, inflammation, allergy, leukemia, trauma, intense exercise, severe emotional or physical stress, tissue damage (for example, burns), smoking or medications (such as allopurinol, aspirin, corticosteroids, etc.). The symptoms correlate with the underlying cause.

Do you have any associated cold or cough? Sometimes even minor infections like upper respiratory tract infection can also lead to raised WBC counts. After treatment with antibiotics, a repeat test show that the values have returned to normal range. You should discuss with your doctor and ask for a repeat test after a few days.

Take care
