when i cough alot i get a sharp pain

When I cough I get a sharp pain in the left side of the top of my head. It feels like an extreme headache. Smetimes it goes away after a couple of minutes. Sometimes it stays for a littl bit longer. But it only happens if I am coughing alot. If anyone has any suggestions please let me hear them. Thanks

I would suggest if this is going on for ne lenght of time to see ir dr and have it checked.

Cough headaches are unusual headaches which are triggered by coughing. They have been divided in to two categories. Primary cough headaches which are usually harmless and secondary cough headaches which are caused by neurological lesions in the brain.
Primary cough headaches are triggered by an increase in intracranial pressure due to straining due to cough.
Secondary cough headaches can occur in chiari malformation. In this condition part of the brain herniates through the opening at the base of skull due to straining while coughing.
Please get a clinical evaluation done by your GP and keep us posted.
