Don't give up richsewter...

My husband was recently diagnosed with an AV fistula which is an abnormal connection between ann artery and a vein in his head.     He has stroke in his family so when he got the same type headache you describe, we kept going until we found a doctor who could help us.
He had severe migraines ( 1 or 2  a month) for years, but 4 mos ago he got bad, pounding headaches, felt and heard his pulse over his ear.  He hears it at night when he tries to sleep.
This sound is called a BRUIT (pronounced bru-wee)  which is NOT normal.

He had bloodwork and mri's - all normal.

He went through at least 5 docs.  1st neurologist diagnosed something called occipital neuralgia, and prescribed PT for his neck. This doctor never even put a stethoscope to his head. He would have heard the bruit.

The radiologist at the mri center told me said my husband should have an MRA (MRI of arteries) so our family doctor ordered it.   This is a non-invasive, 15 min test...painless.   Came back normal according to the report.  We went to another neurologist who read the CD and FOUND the fistula.    He is surprised the radiologist did not see it on the films.  We are now in the process of getting this fixed.

Also there is an excellent book on migraines written by a neurologist from Johns Hopkins - Buchholz.
He claims that all  headaches are vascular in nature.   Check out all the five star reviews on Amazon.   He claims you can get migraine under control with a combination of diet changes and preventative prescriptions drugs...    I do not get migraines myself but I used to get headaches frequently and I have really reduced the severity by following his plan.  BIG RECOMMENDATION is to cut out caffeine and any kind of processed meat (bacon, lunch meat, MSG )

I to suffer from severe migraines. Sometimes they last an hour and sometimes it's days. I've been back and forth to the doctor for the past two months changing meds and getting my ct scan set up. I'm scd for that on the 27th of this month and I'm quite nervous. I've been doing alot of research so I can know more about what might be going on. I've read alot of things and alot of stories, but one really caught my attention. These doctors have been researching migraines and they have came up with the idea that migraines cause brain damage. Migraines deprive the brain of oxygen and cause the symptoms that we go through. I was quite scared when I read that!!!!!  I'm still doing more research so anything else I read I'll send you. Also I would talk with my doctor about that maybe being the reason you have white matter. Eventually things will get worse, if the migraines aren't prevented. The doctors said that having a migraine has the effect of a stroke to the brain. It kills brain tissue and to me that's serious and I think that more doctors should look at it like that. They always want blame stress when something is really wrong. Well I hope that helped a little. Good Luck!!!!

Ok, I'm 28 years old and I have been getting migraines since 12. I am ready to give up. I have had a CT scan,nothing..I have seen 4-6 neurologists, no answers. I finally (after many years) got a MRI. All I was told on the phone is I had lots of white brain matter and I would meet with a neurologist in Oct 2007. I'm so tired of living in pain. All in all I'm a pretty healthy female. These headaches I do not believe are just migraines. I wake up each day in pain, for 16 years straight. I don't know how much more I can take. My shoulders always hurt bad, my neck. I'm always dizzy and my head hurts so much worse if I have a cold or I cry. Please help,anyone...I have been tested for Cushions, dont have it-I dont even meet the criteria.
