Daily chronic migraine/headache

I have had daily chronic headaches for 10 years, I have had very bad migraines as well over this course too, I take maxalt and aspirin and tylenol and darvocet, I am always taking something, does anyone know of any new drugs on the market that are working. I have tried topamax and effexor and other meds that i do not know the name to anymore, I have an app with my neurologist next week and would like any suggestions in new meds.  Also, I always get a bad headache every time after I eat, do any other persons have these types of headaches?

thank you

I hear your pain! I have chronic daily headaches, migraines and ice pick headaches. It seems that I am never pain free. I have tried lots of meds and alternative treatments. I cannot get anything to work. All of the headaches seem to be getting worse lately.
I have been to a headache clinic run by an nuerologist. I seems that there is always new stuff to try. I have recently been on depekote, lyrica and benecor. I have done the pain shots for my neck and am now seeing a nuero-chiropractor. Not sure that he is helping.
I guess you just have to keep trying whatever they ask you to until you find your relief. It is impossible to live in pain on a daily basis. Not sure where I am going from here but I wish you luck.

Hi there~
I know what you go through.. I developed migraines three years ago and I have not had one pain free day since! My neuro has tried many different meds. They can't figure out why nothing will help me.  They haven't worked for me, but they might for you. Med's for high blood pressure can be good preventatives- Nadalol, Diltiazem and Propanolol didn't cause me any side effects. The tricyclic antidepressants are helpful for some people too. You mentioned Topamax... Another anti-convulsant you might ask your dr. about is Depakote. It helped me a bit when I was taking it.  ( I did stop taking it b/c it possibly was the cause of an inflammed  pancreas..you just have to be monitored, because it is a possible side effect). Fiorinal works well for me to treat a migraine I already have. It definetly can cause dependency, because it is made up of caffiene, codeine and butalbital. If you get a migraine when you eat, keep track of your food to try and identify triggers. A few people mentioned common triggers like MSG. Once thing about MSG, there are other names for it to look out for. Sodium benzoate and autolyzed yeast extract are in TONS of food, virtually every packaged food or sauce, and they have the similar effects on your blood vessels as MSG. Good luck to you!

The best way to manage migraine headaches is to avoid them. By identifying and avoiding migraine triggers, you can help reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. While some triggers may be out of your control, others are easily avoidable. The following points can help you prevent a migraine:

Identify your migraine triggers in a headache diary
Get regular sleep and activity.
Eat regularly, and do not eat foods that are likely to trigger a migraine.
Manage stress.
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.
Migraines may be triggered by food, stress, and changes in your daily routine or environment.

The most common migraine triggers are:
Stress (either during a stressful time or right after stress subsides) , Menstrual cycle in women , Too much or too little sleep , Fasting or skipping meals , Changes in barometric pressure and weather, Bright light or reflected sunlight ,Foods such as chocolate , Excessive caffeine or caffeine withdrawal , Smoking or being around someone who smokes

Other migraine triggers include
Strong emotions, such as depression or anxiety , Physical exercise , Alcohol, such as red wine , Aspartame, an artificial sweetener that is found in diet sodas, light yogurts, and other sugar-free foods , Monosodium glutamate (MSG), a seasoning that is often found in Chinese food, meats, and other foods , Nitrates, which are found in cured meats such as hot dogs, bacon, and cold cuts , Tyramines, which are found in pickled or marinated foods, aged cheeses, and yeast , Birth control pills and hormone therapy , Certain medications, especially those that dilate blood vessels , Overuse of headache pain medications, leading to rebound headaches , Bright lights, glare, reflected sunlight, or other intense visual stimuli , Odors such as perfume, paint, dust, and certain flowers.

Sumatripton (Imitrex) ,Naproxen (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) are among the new drugs used for migraine along with topiramate .

Hi Debski,

I don't know if you have been to the neuro yet but if you have and don't mind sharing-  I would love to start seeing what the neuro's are saying and if what they are putting you on is working.  I am a very big proponent of Elevil, a very old and safe trycyclic antidepressent.  Some doctors will tell you it causes weight gain.  Studies show that only 25% who use actually gain weight.
It modulates pain and not just Migaine pain.  I have actually had hangovers go away or not have one at all when I should have.  OK, that was when I was younger and could actually tolerate alcohol.

Hello Debski..

I'm Krystal. I'm 23 and I am in the same boat as you. Family history of migraines and I started getting them at 10 maybe once or twice a mo.. then at age 13 i had a stroke ( now I'm fine. I've had a few tias though....but. you'd never be able to tell) however thats what i am left with Chronic migraines. and right now I'm a patient at the Jefferson headache center.. at Thomas Jefferson hospital in PA. I started Oct 1st. They have been great so far.. wheres are you from? You said you've tried topamax and effexor.. Have you ever tried Topoamax and depeecoke together? Before i had my son 2 years ago. It worked for me. However, since, my body has changed so much.. and it doesn't. furicet w/codeine.. or furicet ( spelling is wrong) worked for me.. However didn't stop them from happening. You need to be on a preventative  the drs need to help you find one thats best for you.... the drugs i've taken are much heavier than the ones you listed however they told me to stay away from things like percicet and vicadin.. instead of taking preventatives.. i used to live off of pain killers.. ( which were fine with me bc they took away my pain-- ya know) but I also heard ( never used) that immatrx injections are not bad.. I've heard that the pill form doesn't work though. I've taken esgic. its almost like furiet ... it was ok. and i've had staydol..  which is a heavy duty narcotic.. hummmm what else. i can't remember all the rest.. BUT I KNOW I TRIED PROBABLY LIKE OVER 100.

Also.. some people have food allergies.. and some peoples migraines are triggered by their food. stay away from chocolate, coffee, caffeine ( if you don't have a migraine) sometimes caffeine takes migraines AWAY though. humm lunch meats.. stay away from certain cheeses, pizza, hot dogs, yogurt , fried foods, fatty foods, stuff with msg, ice cream. ...
try to get the same amount of sleep every night, if you have a lot of stress in your life.. go talk to a professional.

sometimes migraines are crazy.. but you kinda have to show them whose the boss lol.. try to get yourself into a schedule. making sure you go to bed at a certain time.. and your eating certain foods and trying to exercies alittle each day. I know sometimes it sounds like b/s but it really does help
