burning sensation

Hello, I am 23 years old and lately I have been having some strange pains in my head. For a while I have been having a really quick (about 2 sec) stabbing pain in my head that qoes away as soon as it comes. I can never tell when it is going to happen, it just does and then it goes away. But lately I have also had this burning sensation in the back and top of my head, and also my ears. Because of my worries and the additional symptom, I immediately went to the ER. They did a CAT scan on me to rule out anything serious (tumors etc) and asked me a bunch of questions. The CAT scan didn't turn up anything abnormal so they reffered me to another doctor and a neurologist. The problem is, is that I will not have insurance to do this until 2008 and I do not want to wait that long to find out what is wrong with me. Along with the burning sensation I also have some typical cold/sinus symptoms such as dranage down my throat, occasional pressue in my nose and forehead, and occasional sneezing. I do no think the burning sensation has anything to do with the stabbing pain I sometimes get because I have not had it in a while. But I would like to know if the burning sensation has anything to do with allergies because it seems like the 2 have come together at the same time. And if it may be, is there anything out there I can take to make the sensation go away? Just to be clear on some other possible issues, Im not having major headaches, I am not dizzy, I am not overweight, I do not have high blood pressure, I am not allergic to anything besides dust and pollen, I do not have a fever, I do not have blurred vision and I have not been hospitlized for anything like this before, except maybe when I was a baby for ear infection. If there is anything that you can suggest it would be great. I know it is difficult to do this over the internet but I am just concerned about this issue. thanks

Hi,

The burning sensation on the head that comes and goes could be neuralgia. Please consult a neurologist. Also for sinustis OTC antihistaminics and steam inhalation work wonders.Hope you feel better soon!

Hi,
Yes the symptoms you describe could be because of the sinusitis or because of the allergies. What is important is you discuss with your physician and get some sinus xrays done to rule that out. What you could do is try steam inhalation, saline nasal drops, antihistaminics and some painkilllers and see if that helps. If it responds to these then you do not see the neurologist at all. Also try to avoid the dust and pollen. Ask the physician if he could prescribe some nasal sprays - that usually help a lot.If the pain still persists then you definitely need an appointment with the neurologist to rule out any neuralgias.
