Autopsy of fetus

Hey ladies...have any of you ever had an autopsy done on your baby to determine why you had a miscarriage.  I had a miss at 17 weeks a couple days before Christmas and had a D&C.  They were able to test the tissue to determine the reason for the autopsy.  It turns out it had an extra chromosome 13.  I was amazed that they were able to detect something like that, but it did give me tremendous closer just knowing that I didn't do anything wrong.  The doctor said the chromosomes develop at the time of conception so there is absolutely nothing I could have done to prevent the miscarriage.  He also told me that there is no reason that I shouldnt be able to start trying as soon as I get my period and I still only carry the 20% risk of miscarriage just like all woman.  I am so glad I opted to have this done and I truly feel so much better about all of this since it was my first pregnancy and first miscarriage.  Just thought I would share.  Has anyone else had this done and received the same type of reason for miscarriage?

I chose to bury our son...I couldn't go through with it..I didn't want any one to touch him. But saying that it was my first m/c and they performed all the tests on my placenta...and I had all the blood works done and they found nothing! I have now been diagnosed with a short cervix or incompetent...which makes me so frustrated that they could of caught earlier in my pregnancy but they don't measure you until like 18 weeks plus! how sad! but they will now keep any eye on me because I have had a miscarriage! I think regardless of it being your first or your third pregnancy so many miscarriages take place due to short cervix they should start to keep an eye and measure it from day one! Because their are solutions to it if caught early! there isn't a single day where I don't blame my self or live in regret..it has only been 6 weeks since my miscarriage...I wish I had not been so active and I wish I had been more strict with my doctors! but none of this will bring my child back to me. I just have to learn to move forwards! :/

I was frustrated when I did the d&c because they promised to do an autopsy but never did. Its good you got to find out what went wrong. I wish I knew so I could stop blaming myself. They apparently dont do autopsies here unless its your 3rd m/c :/
My husband is turning 41 soon and the clock is ticking bleh..

I just had a m/c & had d&C on 1/6  they also biopsy the tissue but came back as normal female.  They believe the test was inconclusive & that the lab tested my tissue instead of babies.   This kind of frustrated me as I was hoping for some answers.
I am not being tested for all blood clotting disorders which I am happy about just incase.  I also have to have HSG done again when AF arives.... I just wish it would come....

Thank you very much! I came to this website almost 2 yrs ago and I found such support and understanding. I was at the point and place in my life where I just needed to talk with other women who had experienced a similiar kind of pain. I realized along the way every woman deals with their grief differently. For my own pain it was being able to help others that has truly been my strength to guide me along the road ahead! Sorry for your loss I'm here if you need to talk!!!!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss!  I had a D&C done at 11 1/2 weeks and the baby was 6 1/2 weeks, they too tested the baby and found nothing wrong.  The dr told me that it's good they didn't find anything because it means genetically there wasn't anything wrong with me or the baby, however in my situation there is no way to know what happened.  Nothing I did caused the miscarriage, I didn't do anything any different than with my first (which he's now 1 1/2).

It's good to know you didn't do anything wrong, miscarriages happen all the time, most for no reason at all, I wish I knew why mine really happened.

ArmyPrincess819 - I'm sorry you had to deal with so many miscarriages before finding out what was wrong, it's hard enough to deal with one, I couldn't' imagine multiple :(  The strength that you and others on this (and other) boards has give me strength to move foreword gracefully.

I'm sorry. I have never had a autopsy done.  I had a d and e at 19 wks and a dnc at 14 wks. I also had 4 natural m/cs. It was a nightmare. I never really got any closure or answers. I have kind of put together my own reasons why they happened. My son is 6 mos old and he was born with a blood incompatablility and that was a cause of my high risk pg with him along with the fact that I have chronice uti's when I'm pg. which both have been confirmed to cause m/c.  The closure you have will help you begin to be at peace with what happened. It will not minimize it or erase it but at least it allows you to move ahead. I hope you have a easy recovery. I'm always here if you need to talk.
