Can you tell any abnormalities by just by how it looks?

I just had a miscarriage at 10 weeks. The last time I saw the heartbeat was 8 weeks 2 days. I'm not sure when it died but it looked like the fingers/toes hadn't begun to form yet. Naturally, I'm searching for answers. My question is, it was still in the sac, but the head/neck area was really long, appearing more than half the length of the body and stretched out. Nothing like what I've seen when researching. What could've caused this? In general, are there any visual clues as to what might've gone wrong?
