D & C recovery time

My doctor thinks I had a missed carriage.  I'm supposed to be 8 weeks but sonogram showed only 5 weeks and 4 days.  She wants to reconfirm this Friday with another sonogram but things are looking gloom.  If we have to do anything, I would like to do D & C and want to know how long it took others for recovery.  My doc says I need full 2 weeks of rest after D & C, but I've read online that you only need 2 days of rest.  I really don't want to take long recovery if it's not necessary.  I want to go back to work as soon as possible and move on with my life after the surgery and recovery.  I don't want to sit at home and be reminded of horrible thing I'm going through...

Thanks in advance for letting me know about your recovery times after D & C..

I had D&C  last 29th of october i was about 9weeks but the doctor measured it 7 weeks with no heart beat. Crazy part was i noted a weekly pregnancy on my mobile :(  im on my 3rd week of recovery now and back to work but still sad at times and teary eyed. I get upset and emotional and tried not to break down when brought up. Im glad we have this site.i hope ill be fine soon :(

My doctor also gave me the option. I felt the d and c was best for because i was already devastated that i already was carrying my child for 3 weeks with no heart beat.. I just didnt wanna feel like it was my fault and maybe i could fix it if i just waited for my body to realize the baby isnt alive..

im very sorry what has happen i also wentr through the same i am having 2 weeks rest at home, its hard but its important to keep yourself busy also when your at home, its important to prepare ahead and be strong

after a d and c its really important to rest i know it can take time to emotionally recover but at least 2 weeks rest is important, you might think you r ready and can go back to work, but the body is still for recovering, its internal. its important to look after yourself before u get pregnant again

i wish everyone good luck

I'm sorry to hear this.. I went through the same experience, only mine was our very first scheduled appointment.  I went through D & C on June 29th and I feel fine physically, emotionally I was off for about a month.. I think it's different for everyone.  Just remember the people who care about you the most, and take care of yourself...and you can get through it.  Just believe that you will.

I'm scheduled to have a D&C tomorrow and really haven't gotton used to the idea of going through this. I was 13 weeks pregnant and felt fine. Went in for a regulary scheduled ultrasound and found out the baby wasn't moving.........no spotting, cramps or anything out of the ordinary. Because I'm this far along the doctor want to do the D&C and I'm not sure what to expect....It took me solong to get pregnant and now this :(

Hi jlp111!
I feel your pain.  You and I had our experience very close in time.  My positive thoughts are with you.

Thanks so much!  I did get the extra ultrasound on 7/8, with my D&C scheduled for 7/9. Well, at first I felt silly having that extra ultrasound, but my doctor reassured me that many women do have another just to be sure.  She said that at least 75% of women have another ultrasound to confirm. Unfortunately, there was no miracle in her office that day.  The result was the same.  I went for pre-op later that day (and luckily at a very good hospital - they were just great). Almost all bleeding has stopped (7/12) - if any it is intermittent.  I hope this will help me get back into my routine a little more quickly this time. Like I said, with the previous 3 m/c's it was earlier so I miscarried naturally - and bled for about 5 weeks.  That was really tough too.  I hope that having this procedure done will allow for test results with answers, and I know it saved me some agony and pain. Good luck to us all!  :-)

Thank you everyone for your thoughtful comments.. I've had my D & C on June 29th, Monday.  I was able to go on my business trip just 5 days after my surgery and have not had any physical problems.  I'm still struggling a bit emotionally, but it will take time for me to get over this completely.  The month of June was a roller coaster ride for me.. I found out I was pregnant on June 1st, had first u/s on June 19th, started bleeding on 21st, had second opinion & u/s on June 22nd, had third u/s on June 26th.. and finally D & C on 29th... this was a month that my husband and I will never forget even though we will wish to forget about it.  I sincerely wish everyone luck and find it within yourself to keep moving on..

I've read a lot of posts here where they have seen a hb but than the next u/s there was no hb.  The women have opted to wait and get another u/s done and low and behold there was the hb again.   I really hope your outcome is like those and there will be a hb.  I'll be praying for you and hoping for positive results.

I am so sorry for what we all have to go through. I am crazy enough to be having another u/s before my D&C tomorrow. Crazy part is that we saw the hb at 6 wks, then no hb at 8 wks. Logically, I know the hb can't come back but want to confirm (what I already must know) before tomorrow's procedure.
Best wishes to you all.

I'm so sorry you are going through this.  I was in the same situation.  I thought i was 8 weeks, ultrasound showed 6 weeks.  Heartbeat was low.  This went on for about a week.  I had passed the baby naturally through a miscarriage when I was just spotting brown.  But I had a D & E for the empty sac.  It was a VERY hard thing to go through!!  I had my D & E on a Friday morning.  I was out that night doing regular stuff.  I had a few cramps here and  there.  Never needed any pain meds.  I did take a few ibpro. a few times.  My doctor said Pelvic rest for 2 weeks.  Which meant no sex, tampons, things of that nature.  Good Luck with everything!

I'm the same way I just want to forget all about it and move on. For me it was a defense mechanism which is how I chose tohandle the pain. I didn't however ignore my health. Every woman deals with their grief differently just be certain you put your health first. Don't rush your recovery......I'm here if you need to talk!

Army Princess,

Thank you.. I am thankful to find this forum and connect with members like you.  I will have to listen to my doctor, but part of me wants to just put it all behind me.  But something could change tomorrow..who knows.  I don't think I will get much sleep tonight.

Hi, Im sorry to hear about ur situation I had a missed miscarriage at wat they estimated 8.5 weeks (but i knew i was 6.5weeks cos we knew when we concieved) but I just cant get the niggling feeling that they made a mistake as the straight away rushed me in for d&c rather than checking again like in ur case. I really hope everything will be ok for you x

I'm sorry you are going through this. I would def have the u/s done again as well as your hcg levels to see if they are rising. I'm a very optomistic person, I don't want to fill you with false hope but don't throw the towel in yet. It's hard to say every situation is different. I would def listen to your dr and try not to rush it sometimes that can create more problems. There are many reasons why dr's tell us to rest. I know it will be hard but try to give your body a chance to heal and recover. A m/c and d and c can be very traumatic not only on your heart but your body too. I would talk with your dr. Sometimes the info we come across on the internet may not be based on dr's information. Best wishes to you and good luck! I'm here if you need to talk!
