Had an ectopic surgery, but they didn't find the baby. Am I still pregnant?

Hi, I am in a very stressful situation right now and even my doctor seems very confused. Last week, I had to have an emergency laproscopy for a suspected tubal pregnancy. My blood work showed that my HCG levels were measuring in the 8-10 weeks along range. My last period was back in Sept. I went in to the E.R with pain on one side. They did an u/s and did not find a baby in the womb. After the surgery, which was awful, the doctor told me that they did not find a pregnancy anywhere in my tubes or ovaries. I spent 2 days in the hospital, had repeat bloodwork showing my HCG levels rising and 2 more u/s showing no sac or anything. My doc said that with my levels as high as they are, they should see something in utero. I am now terrified that I have a baby growing somewhere inside my body in a very bad place. It's just a wait and see what happens sort of deal. Is it possible that in some cases it may just take up to ten weeks or so to see something in utero?? It's horrible to feel all of these pregnancy symptoms and not know where your baby is growing.

I've never heard of anything like this!  No wonder you are worried.  I just wonder, when they did the Ultrasounds, did they concentrate purely on where you uterus is or did they look all over you tummy?  How long are they prepared to use the "wait and see" approach?  I know if it were me I would be wanted more definite answers within a week because your hcg levels continue to rise then there has to be a reason for it and as only a pregnancy can produce hcg levels then there must be a baby in there - surely!

At 8 - 10 weeks yes you would definitely see a pregnancy, by 10 weeks the fetus is the shape of a little human with little arms and legs.

Did you do a pregnancy test when you missed your first period?

Sorry for all the questions but as I said I've not heard of this before, maybe somebody else on the forum will be able to give more insight.

Please keep us up-to-date if you can.

Oh dear!  I can see how scary this is for you.  Another thing for your doctor to consider, if in fact you're not pregnant, is the presence of trophoblastic disease or germ cell tumors of the ovary.  When hCG levels are elevated in a non-pregnant woman, this may be a reason.  Perhaps you can be referred to a specialist if your doctor still seems confused.  I hope you find an answer soon!
