Induced miscariage?

I went to my OB/GYN the other day excited to see the first ultrasound of my baby. The doctor did a vaginal ultrasound and said that the baby was smaller than it should be and the heartbeat was faint. About 20 seconds later he said that there was no heartbeat. The ultrasound took place for a total of two and a half minutes. After this, he wrote me a prescription for a medication that will help make the baby "pass", along with a referral for another ultrasound by a different place. I am extremely confused and upset. My boyfriend works as a pharmacy tech and said that the prescription he gave me, Cytotec, was for a medicine for gastric ulcers. I did more research about the medicine and read many warnings about it. I have been prescribed this for an "off label" use and I am frankly not happy. How can there be a heartbeat, and twenty seconds later not be one?

I am 20 years old and I feel this doctor suspected me to be ignorant due to my age. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any experience with this medicine? It doesn't seem safe to me, and something definitely seems wrong...f

I agree that you need a second opinion.  Even now when everything is easier to see my U/S lasts more than a couple of minutes!!!  I am sorry that this dr was so rude (thats the only word I can think of at the moment...but feel free to add your own!!! :))  Good luck!!!  Keep us updated!!

Hi I had a miscarriage in march 2009 and I know for sure I did but I took cytotec instead of having the dnc surgery!  it give you bad cramps and does work!  I thought it would be better than the dnc where there were far more BAD side effects that were possible!  I would def. get a second opinion.

Two and a half minutes sounds like a rush job and then quickly writing out a prescription without giving you other options does not sound like a doctor you would want to stick with.  His diagnosis was too hasty so don't you jump to any conclusions until you've had a second opinion. I think you should wait for a second ultrasound with an experienced technician before you worry about anything else.  I was 8 weeks pg and my dr had me come back for another u/s. The techician gave me a transvaginal u/s  and it lasted much longer than 2.5 minutes.  You didn't say how long you were in your pregnancy, maybe its too early, maybe the dates are off   - whatever - just get a second opinion.

Unfortunately, my pregnancy ended in m/c and the doctor gently gave me three options :  wait it out and miscarry naturally , d & c ,  or cytotec.  I did ask for a prescription of cytotec just in case I got tired of waiting.     I waited 4 weeks before naturally miscarrying at home - drug free.

I wish you alot of luck and - I know its tough because your doctor didn't handle the situation well - but keep positive until you get a definite diagnosis.
