Is is a painful period or early miscarriage?

I am new to this so my question is this.

I have been on the pill for many months now but with my hectic schedule lately I have forgotten to take it a couple times these past two months.  My last period was very light only 2 days I did not think much of it.  I am not due for my period until next week for this month but yesterday started experiencing very bad cramping and back pain. Later I went to use the rest room and a black line of discharge was on my underwear.  Today my cramping and lower back and neck pain is very painful hard to walk around and do things. I did start bleading a little more at first light this morning and then heavy and now nothing. I don't know what this is but I am in a lot of pain and just know this is nothing like any of my other bad periods. Please help I am not sure if I should go to the docs or take a home pregnancy test.

I would say to do both, the test and go to your doc, either way you will need to go see your doctor.
