Low Progesterone level

Low Progesterone level

I recently miscarried Jan 9. the day before I miscarried I had my first OBGYN office visit. during the visit they did an ultra sound which showed that instead of the 9 weeks i was supposed to be, I measured 5 weeks. I know this was impossible since that would mean I found out I was pregnant the day after I conceived. I expressed my concerns but my Dr just thought I had my dates mixed up. They then took my blood for the blood work and I went home. The next day I ended up in the ER where I found out I lost the baby. The only thing that concerns me is that the blood tests came back showing that my progesterone level was a 3. it was supposed to be between 11-40, it was extremely low, way too low to support a pregnancy. the Dr office called to put me on some supplements to stop me from losing the baby but it was too late. My main question is, did I lose the baby because my progesterone was too low, or was the progesterone so low because I was in the process of miscarrying?

I thought progesterone would go down like HCG, gradually returning to normal AFTER the miscarriage not before, but may be I am wrong. I am just concerned because I believe I might be pregnant again, and want to make sure there is not a chance I could have a problem producing progesterone. also, if it makes a difference I had stopped taking the depo shot 8 months before the pregnancy, can that affect my progesterone levels.

Sorry for your loss. My OB/GYN won't even test progestrone levels. She says that low progesterone levels are a symptom of miscarriage not a cause. She also says that some doctors prescribe supplements just to make women feel better, but supplementing progesterone can't prevent miscarriage.

Personally, I don't know what to believe. I've read ALOT of accounts on M/H about progesterone supplementation success stories. Furthermore, I don't believe supplementation is harmful. If I were you I would definately speak to my dr. about progesterone.

Can't comment re Depo.
Good luck with your new pregnancy!

I don't know why worried2451 doc said that, because Progesterone is what "sustains" a pregnancy until the placenta kicks in. So yes having low progesterone isn't a good sign for pregnancy. I would make your doc check it and if it's low get supplements if your doc wont then find a new doc who will. I recently miscarried and am preggo again and am having my new doc check my progesterone and get supplemented if needed. You will be in my prayers! Keep me updated!
