MTHFR causes miscarriages, anyone out there diagnosed?

I was just diagnosed with a mutation of the MTHFR gene. This causes the body not to absorb folate or B9, which is essential to the fetus. It also causes blood-clots. I have had 2 m/c's in the past year, and may be on my way to a 3rd one, because I didn't start taking the right vitamins till well into my 6th week of pregnancy. I also have to take a baby aspirin for the rest of my life. I'm 7w5d today, and last Thur I went in for my 1st u/s, and I only measured 5w5d, so the baby's not developing. We couldn't even see the baby, so for all I know I could have a blighted ovum.

Is there anyone out there that's gone thru this or tested positive for MTHFR? I'd love some insight.

You're so awesome. Thank you so much for thinking and praying for me. I suppose I haven't actually had a m/c, but I'm ready for it, cuz the possibilities are high. I'm PRAYING I'm wrong, but if I'm not, I'm totally prepared for the next time. I'm not giving up yet!

I am praying HARD that next Wed at my u/s we see a lil alien.

I was diagnosed with PCOS and the homozygous MTHFR mutation after my 2nd miscarriage.  I had my homocysteine levels checked (which is what the MTHFR effects) and it was normal.  I was put on baby aspirin as a precaution and was put on metformin for my insulin resistance associated with the PCOS.  I had a total of 4 miscarriages between December 2005 and March of 2007 - I finally got on the right combination of meds and now have a 4 week old beautiful baby girl.

make sure you have your homocysteine levels checked - take the baby aspirin as a precaution and increased folic acid (if doctor prescribes) and good luck.  If that is your only issue, you may be ok with only those precautions.  I'll be thinking of you - I know how hard it is, but when things finally work it is soooo worth it!  I'll be going on the same combination of meds when we try for #2 - but that will be a while!

Wow! Congrats on your lil blessing! I pray I get there. Seems like an impossible mission. I tested + for the same mutation as yours, but I didnt start the folbic pill(folic, B6, B12) till about my 6th week, so I'm scared I was too late. I started ba last week. I'm taking regular prenatals as well. Today I started an extra mg of folic acid on my own. What did you take?

I was on baby aspirin, folgard (extral folic acid, b6,b12), prenatals....I started progesterone supp 3 dpo and was on 1500mg of metformin - that combo is what worked for me.  I stayed on the prog & met thru 13 weeks.  When we try for #2 that is what I want to do again so I don't have to worry that we didn't do what worked in case something happens again.  It is really hard, but try to stay positive and do anything and everything you think necessary and really talk with your doctor about your concerns.  I went thru 2 different REs before finding the right combination of things to try.  Good luck!

i tested negative for the MTHFR gene, but did have 2 MC's.  the second MC was a blighted ovum.  even though i tested negative, the fertility doctor still put me on baby apsirin and progesterone supps.  i do have psorasis that my doctor said at any given time can change my blood flow and cause it to clot.  i am now 7 weeks pregnant again and so far so good.  so make sure you meet with the doctor again, always take your vitamins and ask also about progesterone as a security thing.

Kimmy,
I too have been diagnosed with MTHFR. We had very early m/c - or chemical pregnancies (I think that is the dr.'s nice way of saying miscarriages). We have done 3 IVF treatments and one FET cycle.

Our first IVF - bfn.
2nd IVF - beta got as high as 15 then stopped, also had breakthrough bleeding because progesterone was not high enough
3rd ivf - beta got as high as 9 then stopped.
FET cycle - bfn.

According to my RE, the bean would start to implant, then a clot would form, ceasing the implantation and growing proces.  I now have to take a baby aspirin a day, extra folic acid, and Lovenox injections.  We are starting another fresh round of IVF sometime in August.

Good luck to you, and many many hugs.

THANK YOU all so much for your responses.

There was no heartbeat at my sonogram this morning, which I knew it beforehand that would be the outcome. As soon as the sonographer walked in, I told her she wasn't going to see anything. So, I'm waiting on my OB to call me back on the D&C, and their going to scrape some things out to analyze, and maybe we'll get some questions answered . DH &I are also going in for some genetic testing. When we finally get to our TTC phase again, I'm feel pretty confident we'll be ready. I'm going to stick to my baby aspirin, prenatals, folbic pill, and extra folic acid to try to get my body ready for the next time.

So glad to have your amazing ladies!

i am sorry Kimmy.  seeing the fertility specialist is the best thing you can do,  that is what me and my fiance did after our 2nd MC.  it took up about 1-2 months to complete all the testing and then were given the go ahead to start TTC again right after that.

I also have hetero MTHFR, along with Factor V and Factor II.  Because I was hospitalized with a clot in college, I definitely have to be on lovenox injections after I become preg.  Only thing is we have been ttc for over two years.  I sometimes wonder if all these clotting issues cause me NOT to become preg.  Once I finally do, then I know there is a good chance I will miscarry.  I am also starting a new cycle of IVF, my second, this July/Aug.

Kimmy, I am sorry about what you are going through, have you been to an RE or asked about lovenox?

Hi OhBaby!

Don't be sad for me. I've come to terms with the loss, and I'm just ready to start over, and the next time we'll be totally prepared cause we know what I need to take. I actually started going to an RE yesterday, and funny you should ask, I planned on asking about Lovenox!

I also have hetero MTHFR and I tested pos for that after 2nd m/c. I take a prenatal, b6, folic (800mcg) and a baby asprin everyday, at the same time, 10 am. I had my third m/c last august but I wonder if I m/c because I hadn't been taking my asprin because I ran out and DH and I weren't trying to conceive at the time so I didn't rush to get more, then I found out I was pregnant and rushed right out to buy some but lost that pregnancy at 6 weeks also. That seems to be about when I always m/c 5-6 weeks. SO, we are ttc again now and for the past year I have been taking my vitamins religiously, so hopefully it will work for us. I have an appointment with a new RE next week to see if there is anything else that can and should be done to ensure that our next little bean sticks. My prayers are with you girls!
