Pleurisy?

Well I just got back from the dr. where I found out I have pleurisy. My dr. put me on the strongest anti-inflamatory that they have. I asked the pharmacist and my dr. what would happen if I have got pregnant in the past few days. The pharmacist said that she thinks it is okay and that it would be a greater risk later in pregnancy...Then she went on to tell me how she has known women to undergo chemo while pregnant and the baby turn out fine. That made me feel better, but I wanted to know if any of you have have any knowledge about anti-inflamatories and pregnancy. I don't have a lot of time to look anything up right now. I'm off to another appointment. I would love any info you ladies have to offer...Hope all of you are having a great day :D I'll be back to catch up on all the latest news later...

You all are not going to believe this! First the good news is that the medicine worked and my pain is almost gone. But I had to stop the meds today. I looked in the mirror and saw that I was swollen...I weighed myself and had gained 7 lbs in 2 days. I called the pharmacist who said to go straight to the er which I though was kind of harsh. So I called my dr. who said that it happens, but not very often with this medicine. I haven't taken it since this morning and I can tell the difference that the aching is coming back. So I'm praying that it just goes away so I can be done with this mess and move on to better things :D
hazleyez, GMB, AP- Thanks :) I'll take all the hugs I can get right now.
kikki- Thanks for the info. That helps to ease my mind alot. I was really worried about the effects it might have.
kgokgo- You have me in tears. That means so much to me :D
Steph- Thanks, I hope all of this turns out to be relevant and that I am already pregnant!

Ranitidine is Zantac and that is safe during pregnancy. Indocin is a pregnancy category B medication, so it should be ok to use in pregnancy.

Sorry you are not well. Hope it clears up soon. Since I didn`t get my bfp, I`ve diverted my bfp prayers to you. I just told God that I accepted it wasn`t my turn yet but Steph could do with a bfp right now. Hope He answers. Lots of baby dust.

I actually take anti-inflammatory meds all the time and NSAIDS are pretty safe during pregnancy.  I have to continue taking mine during pregnancy.  Ironically, I received Indocin to stop pre-term labor at 17 weeks.  It was a miracle drug for my pre-term labor, so I hope it works well for our symptoms.  I wish you all the best.  Let me know if you have other questions.

I get to PIAC the last day I'm on these meds. It will still be early, only CD28. But you all know I can't not test and then possibly miss a day of being pregnant :P So far the medicine has just made me sleepy. They canceled school here today b/c the temp is in the - so I have my kids with me today and I wont get a much wanted nap. I hope to be awake enough to continue my BD'ing marathong tonight :D

I am still confused as to what caused this though. I wish I knew because everything that I have seen says that the only way to really cure it and make sure it doesn't come back is to treat what is causing it. Well I have no clue...I guess if it ever comes back we'll have to find out.

Sorry to hear you're feeling bad, but I agree that it's better to take it now and get over before BFP time.  Is it something that can come back, or should the medicine take care of it?  I hope you feel better today, and next week maybe you'll have some good news for '09!!!

you are right, thank god it was not something more serious...at least they found it and you can get rid of it.  If you start taking the meds now, but the time you have to pee you should be better...and hopefully you will be ALOT better when you pee...get it?

feel better buddy!

I know right! I wish I would have gone a couple of weeks ago...It is something that has to be fixed so I guess it's better now than finding out after I get my BFP. I am going to start testing in 7 days :D I am going to start taking it tonight so I can go to sleep instead of feeling the effects and getting sick. I just read where it says not to take them late in pregnancy. My dr. said the max you can be on this medicine is 7 days. So I am just hoping that it goes away so I don't have to ask what the next option is.

I believe Indocin (Indomethacin) is similar to Ibuprofin  during pregnancy.  It's a category b drug in the first 2 trimesters and a cat d drug in the third.  In later pregnancy it causes a problem with the fetal kidneys, which in turn lowers fetal urine output and amniotic fluid.  I wouldn't worry about taking it for 7 days now.  Even if you are pregnant, what chances do you think you've implanted yet?

nunu & mikaleen- It is called Indocin, it's a Non-Steroidal (NSAID). The dr. and pharmacist warned me that this is a very strong drug. Which stinks because I'm already sensative to meds. She also gave me Ranitidine for my stomach to take with it.
AP- Thanks. That's the thing is that I don't really know what caused it or how long I have had it.
Bam- You're the best :D Thank you so much. You should have seen my face when she told me...I had never heard that word before. So that helped alot. I have been running all day with appt.'s all around town so that helped me not have to spend forever on my slow computer looking it up before I go crazy :)
Dani- This has been going on for a while, but other than ttc I always put things off. I kept saying it will go away thinking that it was just from being sick so much. Now that I have nothing else wrong it is still getting worse and I finally broke down and went to the dr. I have no clue what could have caused it. I don't know that I have anything that they say causes it? I had pain on the right side of my back that started when I was pregnant so I just wrote that off to that. Then it never really went away. What really started to get me worried is that now it is hurting on my left side from my chest all the way through my back. It hurts pretty bad to take a deep breath. It could be worse though...I was starting to get worried that I had lung cancer or something. So I consider myself lucky if this goes away in a week :D

Thanks again for all of your amazing support!

Oh Bam,  your so cute...thanks for posting that I was going to look it up!

Steph...are you feeling OK or are you in pain?  Did you get it from when you all were sick during Christmas?  I can't believe you have something else to add onto your already full plate...All I can say is good things are bound to come your way...SOON!

Hey, when life gives you lemons...pick them up and throw them at somebody else!!  Just kidding...but it does seem like you have had enough of these setbacks!

What Is Pleurisy?
Pleurisy, also called pleuritis, is an inflammation of the pleura, which is the moist, double-layered membrane that surrounds the lungs and lines the rib cage. The condition can make breathing extremely painful. Sometimes it is associated with another condition called pleural effusion, where excess fluid fills the area between the membrane's layers.

The double-layered pleura protects and lubricates the surface of the lungs as they inflate and deflate within the rib cage. Normally, a thin, fluid-filled gap -- the pleural space -- allows the two layers of the pleural membrane to slide gently past each other. But when these layers become inflamed, with every breath, sneeze, or cough their roughened surfaces rub painfully together like two pieces of sandpaper.

In some cases of pleurisy, excess fluid seeps into the pleural space, resulting in pleural effusion. This fluid buildup usually has a lubricating effect, relieving the pain associated with pleurisy as it reduces friction between the membrane's layers. But at the same time, the added fluid puts pressure on the lungs, reducing their ability to move freely. A large amount of fluid may cause shortness of breath. In some cases of pleural effusion, this excess liquid can become infected.

What Causes Pleurisy?
Viral infection is probably the most common cause of pleurisy. Other causes include the following:

Lung infections, such as pneumonia and tuberculosis
Other diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus), rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, liver diseases, and  pulmonary embolism
Chest injuries
Drug reactions
Pleurisy and pleural effusion are generally only as serious as the underlying disease causing it. If you have either of these conditions, you may already be undergoing treatment for the underlying disease; if not, seek medical attention immediately.

A pleural effusion can occur without pleurisy  Kidney disease, heart failure, and liver disease can cause pleural effusion without inflammation or pain.

Sorry Steph, I don't have any info to help.  I hope that you start feeling better soon.

I left you a note, and I mentioned steroids because I wasn't thinking and you mentioned strong anti inflammatories, so I assumed steroids.  Duh, sorry.  Are they steroidal or non-steroidal, because each class would be different. Sorry.
