Same 'type' of recurrent miscarriage

I've had two confirmed miscarriages (and one possibly in 2008 but it was early and unconfirmed- we weren't trying), so the MD is ordering a whole slew of lab tests and an HSG to figure out if there's a reason for my recurrent pregnancy loss.

I've heard that approx 50% (number varies wherever I look) of couples who undergo testing won't ever find the 'reason' for their recurrent pregnancy loss.  And the remaining couples will have some sort of antibody issue, clotting issue, progesterone, translocation, etc.

My question is if I had one of the 'explainable' causes of miscarriage, wouldn't I expect my m/c experience to be similar in 'type'?  One of my miscarriages was a missed miscarriage when the baby stopped developing at 6.5 weeks (and I thought I was 10 weeks).  The other was a blighted ovum, so no yolk sac or baby ever formed.

Those don't sound to me like they have a lot in common as far as it being an 'explainable'' cause.  I've heard many women with recurrent pregnancy loss where their miscarriages frequently present very similarly (ie, approx same length of time, same symptoms, etc)

Is there anything to the miscarriages being similar?  My MD said she was of the opinion that a miscarriage is a miscarriage, it doesn't matter what 'type'... has anyone else heard differently from their MD?  Or have any different opinion?

You could ask your doctor to do a simple blood test for antiphospholipid syndrome.  Its a blood disorder that can cause miscarraiges that gets over looked but can be controlled.  You can google it for more info.  I was diagnosed with it, I know this wont be the case for  everyone but it may help someone.

Hi!  I acutally have had the exact same situation as you did.  I believe the defination of "explained" is not that it was just a "missed" abortion.  I believe that in order for it to be truly explained you would have to of had the testing done on both products of conception.  I had my first miscarriage tested and it came back as an extra choromosome #22.  This is supposed to be a "fluke" type of thing that happens on all the cell divisions etc.  So that miscarriage is technically explained.  My second miscarriage which is looking like a blighted ovum (currently still going through it) has not been tested as of yet so would be unexplained most likely.  Regardless, I do not think that either one is related to one another.  Although my doctor chalks it up to bad luck.  I HATE that she says that because its infuriating.  But, it is what it is right?  Let us know how the testing goes!  Good luck to you

well that doesnt sound right because different misscarraiges are caused by different things, the 2 you have had sound totally different so doesnt that say its not your bodies fault its just an awful coincidence.i had a missed misscarriage and my doc said that the likely cause was a bad chromasone or something and there was nothing i could of done to prevent it and it wasnt my fault.i have 2 healthy children too.the blighted ovum you had is something totally different to the missed misscarraige.i would say it sounds like each misscarriage you have had do not have anything to do with each other.
