don't know what to do

I'm 36, have 4 children. My last 3 were C-section, so of course I opted for a tubal ligation. About a month ago found out I was pregnant, welcomed surprise after 9 years. However, I was scared and went straight to the doctors to confirm and ask questions. Never having normal periods ever since 11 yrs old, I keep track of my cycle when it comes. I could have been any where from 2 weeks to 9 weeks from my (hubby calendar). Long story short 2 weeks ago I ended up in the ER with cramping, they did the work up ultrasound and blood work, HCG levels above 3700, but no sac in site. My tubes were clear of a sac and no heart beat, they filled me with liquids and bed rest and was sent home. 1 week later back at the ER with spotting and cramping that lasted a day and a half. Blood levels went down to 2300, signs of a miscarriage. Me and the hubby opted for a D&C after the ultrasound still showed no signs of a sac. In the back of my mind I was wondering why have a D&C if no baby in site of my uterus or ovaries. After the heart ache of a pregnant nurse and doctor preforming it, still nothing came out not even blood or any type of liquids. I woke up from the meds and the doctor said next step was chemo shots to help expel the baby. Where could the baby have been? I had both types of ultrasounds each visit and nothing in site.  I just had my second dose of injections and still nothing but what looks like a normal period to me. Pain was worse in the ER waiting to see a doctor than I feel now. I have nausea and food craving like I was still pregnant. Has anyone ever been through this, and what else should I expect to happen while the blood tests come back with updated HCG levels?

Thank you. I'm going in today for the 3rd injection, followed by a week of blood testing. Levels are dropping but not fast enough. Only good thing is I get time out work, and get to be with my kids while school starts for them. Haven't walked them to class in a long time.
