period after miscarriage

i had a miscarriage at the end of july after 5 weeks.  i was bleeding for about a week and a half.  i had an ultrasound and they said that i had lost my baby.  in the last week of august i began to notice painful cramping and light bleeding, which became heavier and heavier over the coarse of five days.  then the bleeding stopped but the cramping stayed strong.  it has been about nine days since these symptoms began and about four days of just horrible cramping.  is this my first period?  how long will it last? what should i do?

I am not sure I understand your complete story...you miscarried after 5 weeks of prego or 5 weeks after miscarriage you bleed?  I am lost.  I am reading that you bleed for a week and a half then discovered you had a miscarriage?  I would guess its your period but I would call my RE OBGYN just to ask if its normal.  They may want to check it out to make sure you don't have an infection, painful cramping can be an infection....my first period was unlike others complete with heavier bleeding and cramps which I didn't have before, nor did I bleed for more than three weeks.  Who knew my first period would be so big, I expected it to be light because I bleed for three weeks (no D&C) then one week off then bleeding again, I assume this was my period because my hormone levels are back to zero.
