second opinion?

Hi all, I went to my ob/gyn for an ultrasound to better determine a due date. He thought I was somewhere around 9wks. at the ultrasound the tech said that the baby was only measuring about 6wks with a large yolk sac and no heartbeat. The Dr. was very quick to suggest a D&C. I asked to wait a week or so and see what happens.  Should I get another opinion? It has been 5 days not one sign of miscarraige and I feel pregnant, still feel nausea and heartburn etc...I am just so confused and conflicted...any thoughts?

sorry to hear that.
I had my D&C on friday and it went really well. It was really quick, no complications, no cramping and I have only been bleeding lightly. I am now counting the days till I get a period again and can start TTC again.

Well, who knows -- it might be that the doctor believed your first day of the last period was the be-all and end-all of information and since a 6-week embryo was wrong for that timing he said everything looked bad, or it might be that he has never known his ultrasonographer to be wrong, or it might be that he was just in a rush and wasn't thinking clearly.  (How well do you know the guy?)  Anyway, definitely have another ultrasound.  It will compare to the last one, which is of course very thoroughly seen and very clear.  There will be no more wondering and guessing based on your first day of your last period and vague things like that.  I hope it comes out for the best!  Good luck.

Thanks girls for your feedback, I am going to schedule a second ultrasound just for peace of mind so that I can get on with my life either way...Annie, the dates of my last period brought me to 9 weeks, but the u/s tech thought perhaps the baby stopped growing at 6...who knows..we spent all of 3 minutes with the dr. and he was like its not good....its not viable..maybe I am being foolish to hold out hope, but if I didnt have another ultrasound I would never forgive myself. thanks for the input

I have been going through your situation for the last month and couple of days. I went in after a positive pregnancy test and they did an U/S (too early to see much) and started checking my blood HCG levels. The HCG levels were not doubeling and even dropped a little. That was about 3 weeks ago. From there the Dr. told me it was most likely not going to be a viable pregnancy and told me the best option is too have a natural pregnancy or we could schedule a D&C. I went in for an U/S for the last 3 weeks one time a week, last week there was not a heartbeat, but in case in I was early then suspected we took another one on Thursday but there was still no heartbeat and the sac had not grown. At this point since the Dr. has been monitoring me he is sure it is not a viable pregnancy.I decided to schedule a D&C because I dont want to possibly wait several weeks for a natural MC because I still feel 100% fine, with all the normal pregnancy symptoms. Basically I scheduled the D&C one week after my U/S last week so it gave me another week, they will do one more U/S just in case and from there I can move on with my life but know I gave it plenty of time.
If you feel better getting a second opinion that is one option. I almost did this because I wanted to think my Dr. was being too hasty, but he has been monitoring me closely and told me he would not give me a D&C if there was a chance this was a good pregnancy. I really hope your pregnancy is fine, and I hope my story doesnt scare you or anything, I just wanted to let you know my experience since I am going through this right now. Dont forget every woman is diffrent.

I would never go for a D&C without at least two ultrasounds.  What if you are in fact at just under six weeks?  (Where did the doc get the opinion that you were at around nine weeks?  Clearly it wasn't from the ultrasound.)  Don't bother to get another opinion from another doctor, just have the first doctor order a second ultrasound and get a follow-up appointment.  If nothing has changed, then you'll have to face bad news, but something might well have changed.
