Bipolarism and mania

Can a person have a bipolar diagnosis if they only exhibit mania but not depression?  Subject is 39 yr. old male, married, father of one.  His mother is bipolar.

Yes. It is fairly rare (almost every person who seems to fall into this category will turn out to have had at least one episode of depression as well as mania).
