About the heat ..... wishing my summer away..

Hello everyone,
   I hope this question finds everyone doing well. THis is the time of year I hate the most and I am sure most or all of you agree. I find myself wishing my summers away :-{
I am on my second opinion for a possible diagnosis of MS. My PCP has no doubts about me having it and my 1st neuro turned out to be a big disappointment , as many of us have experienced. I am going to JH and they are running some more tests. I had yet another MRI done and it stated again "severe" atrophy and multiple lesions in the white matter. I haven't seen JH again. Going soon though. My question today is how do many of you feel in the heat? I don't know if I described it correctly to my new neuro. When i go out within 5 minutes i have a sensation of needles and pins over several areas of my body. I scratch like crazy. When i sit down under a tree or go in to cool down it goes away but I am very tired. I have no red spots or rashes on me, the itching is internally. Do any of you experience the heat like this? I hope not because it would be awful for you but I am sure in one way or another the heat does cause misery. THis started about 6 years ago but every sumer it seems to be worse. I appreciate any thoughts as always. THis is a wonderful group and with all the negative things on the computer it is refreshing to find such a caring and knowledge based group. So glad I found all of you !!!!!

I feel you described it well to the doc  "when i go out within 5 minutes i have a sensation of needles and pins over several areas of my body. I scratch like crazy. When i sit down under a tree or go in to cool down it goes away but I am very tired."

You didn't give it a name, you simply described the symptoms. If this is a good doc he/she will understand that you are experiencing temporary symptoms due to heat, and then feel tired.

If you are feeling badly about wishing the season away, go out early in the am and just take in the fresh early morning air and dew..... Set up a nice comfy chair.... in a pleasant spot, and just sit and listen to the birds chirp..... And, watch the world wake up...  And, when it REALLY wakes up, and heats up! Look at it from behind the window!

(((Hugs)))
Good luck @ your next appt.

I understand completely.   The humidity totally zaps me after a few minutes.  I have trouble standing in direct sunlight and need to seek shade.   I have experienced the 'pins and needles' sensation you describe after being out in the heat for about an hour.   With it came the strong smell of nearby fuel and someone burning wood and I had all i could do to keep from passing out.  The tingling and numbness traveled up my arm and I was in fear i was having a heart attack.  Realizing I was alone heightened my stress and anxiety over the whole matter and I gave myself 5 minutes of ice on the back of my neck and forcing myself to calm down before I called 911.  It worked, the exacerbation passed but I am VERY aware of being outside now.  Look forward to fall.    And since then, during times when it's been warm, I've sometimes gotten the feeling of a 'tickle' on my cheek (face)  It almost feels like the sensation when your skin is drying in the sun after swimming......the evaporation of liquid.  But not overall, and not from sweating.  Just under my eye, on the cheek on one side.    It's frustrating not knowing what odd sensations you need to pay attention to now.     Good luck.   Stay cool.

Like I've said many times before I've been a prisoner of my own home all summer... It's been terrible...Just going to the store will zap me for a couple of days... We have had over 40 days of 100* plus temps here and the humidity is unreal... I'm usually a summer person but this year I'm praying for fall...

Sure hope things get better for you... We finally got a break by getting rain and cooler temps... It's been so wonderful but it is August so I'm expecting more heat... Ugh...

I'll be praying,
Carol

Hey, nanci!  Nice to see you.

Even though I apparently have had MS for close o 20 yrs, last year was the first time heat effected me. It has to be pretty hot and humid to do it or I have to be out in it for a while to feel the effects but they are mostly tingling in my spine and just a rubbery feeling.  The tiredness comes if I stay out in it too long or it is extreme heat.

I have noticed though that as the summer goes on, I have become more and more tolerant of the heat.  There have been times I have actuallly been able to work out in my garden when it's in the high 90's and beyond without feeling any effects other than sweating.

I have also noticed that there were times when after my original dx last year I sometimes had some "bad" days were I just wasn't feeling right. Can't remember the last time that I had a "bad" day now.  Maybe the further away from my relapse, the more my body heals itself?

Idk how it all works but I am so grateful for my recovery and am doing all I can to avoid another relapse, which includes just not pushing myself too much.  Not pushing includes sometimes not doing something, especially in the heat, even though I think I can.

Julie

I'm unofficially diagnosed. (Cognitive Disorder/MS) and the heat for me is terrible. I've been like this a long time, not being able to deal with the heat. I get sick feeling, muscle spasms get much worse etc. I have pins and needles constantly so they don't get worse (can't get any worse since they don't go away lol). I get dizzy easier and just feel like I had been hit with the flu in a matter of minutes. Also, I do itch often but haven't noticed it worse in the heat. I will have to pay attention more next time I decide to venture out in it :)

But, it's been pretty nice here. Low 80's and as long as it's not humid I can semi tolerate that temp. Seems anything over 85 is my limit and humidity ughh forget it. And nights have been mid. 50's it's great! I hope it stays this way!!!!!
