Absent knee refelexes?

Hey, cybergang~

I know I haven't been very present.  I do lurk in my trenchcoat out here, though!  Hope everyone is well.

I wanted to say that I went to see my internist today for some kind of treatment or discussion about this crushing  fatigue I've had lately.  Well, I won't bore you with many details, but what shocked me was when he went to examine me, I had no knee reflexes.  None.  Zilcha*  I could swear I faintly heard my knees saying aloud, "Thud."

I also had repeated clonus in my left ankle.  I didn't say anything.  My doc didn't say anything.  We looked at each other and he looked extremely puzzled.  I think I muttered a Wow.

He tapped each knee three times each, but alternately.  Could he have done it wrong SIX times?  He's no green intern.  I am still in wonderment.  After the exam, he sat down and started, There IS something wrong with you.  We just don't know what it is yet.... blah, blah, blah....

I'm just curious, I guess if I could have absent patellar reflexes now, after them being at 5+ just a year ago in August?  I know they were hyper until my last exam in Feb.  Neuro said 'disgustingly normal.'  Weird.

What do you guys think?  I huge fluke?  Bad exam?  I know Craig has absent reflexes, and I THINK Hot Legs does, too.  Anyone else?

Feel well!  Weirded out,

Zilla*

Hi memme - Welcome to the group.

This is a pretty old thread. It was last updated almost 4 years ago. Many of the thread's participants no longer visit.

Why not Post a Question and tell us a little about what's going on? We're a pretty friendly bunch :-)

I'm new here, but I have some problems that you all do. I have no reflexes in my knees. I have bowel incontinence, led pain behide my knee, and down the back and side of my leg, stabbing pains in my foot and leg, numbness in the outside of my foot and toes. I also can not pick my leg up in a within or lying position. My legs have buckled up under me causing me to almost fall. My gate is different. I just don't walk the same. My legs are weak, unstable.

I fell and had a severe ankle sprain about 6 weeks ago, now because of severe back pain, I go to see a very reputable Chiro, she gets NO reflex response on my right knee which is the same side as the sever ankle sprain, I am in a lot of pain the the right leg is numb from the knee down to the ankle, the ankle still swells after 6 weeks.!!!  Pain is very high!!  Any ideas???  Thanks

Craig has no reflexes in either knee.  And he has clonus too.  About two years ago, they were hyper.  But they slowly diminished to nothing.

Did I hear you say somewhere that he did the knee reflexes "through your jeans."  In my rather extensive experience that drastically dulls the reflex that is there.  It cushions the impact and it's harder to see where you need to hit.  T-Lynn is right on when she says it is a subjective art.

Clonus is the maximum level of tendon reflex (a 5+), so "wow" indeed.  At least he knows there is something wrong.

Good to see you back on.  The trenchcoat hides all your good qualities.

I HAVE NO KNEE OR ANKLE REFLEXES,ZILCH,GONE NOTTA.

THEY WENT FROM HYPER TO SURPASS HYPO AND THERES JUST NO REACTION,MY NEURO CAN BEAT TO HIS OLE HEART CONTENTS.

BUT KEEP IN MIND I HAVE ADHESIVIVE ARACHNOIDITIS(FUSING OR CLUMPING OF THE SPINAL NERVES) SO THE NERVE DAMAGE HAS CAUSED THE ABSENT REFLEX.

IT AMAZES ME THAT YOUR DRS. KNOW SOMETHINGS WRONG,BUT CAN'T JUST PIN POINT IT.

ZILLA FOR A WHILE EVER DR I SEEN THEY HAD A DIFFERENT REFLEX DIAGNOSES.I THINK IT DEPENDS ON HOW YOU ARE POSITIONED AND HOW HARD THE WEEM THAT HAMMER.

I am not sure what the lack of reflexes means in your knees but I had a lack of any reflex in my left leg last year...I had fallen in the bathtub and had a lumbar strain and the neuro insisted that I have an MRI of my pelvis and spine to rule out tumors on my spine which could be causing the lack of reflexes.

He saw me coming I am sure because he said he couldn't get me in for an MRI right away so I paid out of pocket $1150 and they both came back normal.  He had a resident in the room when he couldn't get these reflexes and I still say he was covering his own backside.

I hope you find out what is going on honey...is he doing any more testing or just writing it off as a coincidence?  If he wants to write it off you should have it tested by your neuro or your pcp...I don't think this is something to throw to the wayside.

Let us know what happens and if your reflexes magically come back...mine did and have been fine ever since!

Lots of hugs,

Rena

Hey Zilla, my trench coat is temporarily waiting in the wings.lol

Sounds like you had a strange day. Once again I have no answers, haha but I don't think it was a fluke. Something is definitely going on with you.Maybe this will be the start of you getting somewhere now. Did he say anything about more testing?

Try and get some rest though.I've had that fatigue and it is no fun at all. I sure hope someone else has something more to offer you than what I just did.

Sending big hugs your way

Hey Chris!

I really can't offer anything regarding your reflexes, although I do think that is rather bizarre to say the least....
What else did this doctor say besides blah, blah, blah...??  :)

Nice to see you again!
