Amantadine... Questions.. Opinions

Ok would love some advice about this.

I have fatigue problems, I have spasticity in legs and lower back, possibly bladder

Amantadine helps with fatigue an the doc rx this for me this week. It is up to me if I want to start this. I am up for trying this but not for a couple weeks when my current flare calms down.

So questions:
I see that it helps with Parkinson's and muscle spasms/ twitching could this also help my spasticity?

Will combating my fatigue help my spasticity?

Should I start this route or the spasticity route first?

I have a book of My drugs are approved and I pick them up tomorrow :) one more step complete  I am going to try to help combat this too. Is there any thing else that I should do before starting meds? In the case of spasticity and fatigue?

when I come off the 5 day infusion and that crash surely to be coming after could I use amantadine to help with this?

If I start this med should it be everyday or just the bad weeks???

I had so much going on the day of neuro appt and was surprised by the rx for fatigue from him that all these questions were not prepared so I would love your opinions.
I was not planning to meet him again until November this was a surprise appt to combat my current flare only.

Thanks in advance everyone!!!!

"I am a little scared to start another med!! I am 2 weeks into rebif .... 3/5 days of Ivsm "

I used to worry about taking a lot of meds. I got over it :-) Meds are good! For me thinking about the jobs different meds do. Rebif is supposed to keep MS from progressing. IVSM is used to attack the acute inflammation associated with a relapse. Drugs like Amantadine, or in my case gabapentin, amitriptilyne etc, are used to address specific symptoms like spasticity.

Knowing that each drug is working interdependently to make the whole better. Having had few if any side effects from any of my meds, and seen great benefit, I have gotten over my med apprehensions :-)

Well, I've now taken seven doses, and nothing has happened so far.  I didn't expect it to, since the doctor told me it would be 2 to 3 weeks before it really kicks in.  I'm not on Rebif or Solumedrol, but do use plenty of other meds for a variety of issues, and have experienced no problems at all.

Will it help with spasticity and/or post-steroid crash?  I don't think it can do anything about the crash issue, because it's going to take so long to have any effect against fatigue.  Your last steroid dose is today, right?  Two to 3  weeks from now, when Amantadine starts to help with your fatigue, you'll have recovered from and forgotten about any crash, don't you think?

As to the spasticity question, I am not expert enough in the mechanisms involved, but I don't see how it could hurt.  Do you?

I am a little scared to start another med!! I am 2 weeks into rebif .... 3/5 days of Ivsm ... And feeling like crap!!! And still numb/ dizzy

I would like to see it help with the crash bc day 5 is Monday and a 5 day work week ahead!!

Dennis do u think it will help the spasticity? Or just the fatigue it is intended for?? Either way bonus right?

Cann,

I would start the Amantadine immediately for the following reasons.

1). It may help get you through the current flare since the spasticity can be effecting the quality of sleep you are getting. The body does most of its healing while we are asleep.

2). It may also help reduce the effects of a crash after your are done with the IVSM.

Well, I am far from expert, but just read up on Amantadine, cuz my neuro surprised me with an Rx for this.  Twice a day, and I just took my 4th dose this morning.

Doc told me that it would take two to three weeks of regular usage, 2x/day as noted, before I could get an idea of whether ir not it was helping.   Because of that, I'd surmise that this is not a drug that one starts and stops on an "as needed" (PRN, IIRC) basis.

Just my thoughts.  Peace.
