MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS COMMUNITY
Another manic hair loss problem

Another manic hair loss problem

hey there everyone! i have to say that this site has made me feel a sense of community that i haven't yet had, so thank you.
my issue, among many, heh, is hair loss. i went from having pantene commercial hair to frail, weak hair that falls out at every turn. over the past 8 months or so the hair loss is so significant that i receive concerning glances and inappropriate questions i can't begin to answer from everyone i encounter, questions i myself ask all the time.
i've been diagnosed with MS for about a year and a half, at 21, and am not sure if this extreme hair loss is an allergic reaction, deficiency, another illness, or just comes with the territory of MS. My specialist initially thought it was just stress when i saw him a few months ago, but i genuinely am not stressed or depressed. I have read the commentary re: thyroid tests and such, and I would love any possible additional feedback, as i am taking notes to discuss with anyone who'll listen.
I'm located in Toronto, ON, Canada, in case that is of use to anyone.
Thanks again for everything! =)

Welcome to the forum.

I wouldn't say that hair loss is a symptoms of MS.  It may be caused by medications you are taking or another metabolic disorder.  You may want to discuss this with your doctor.

I noticed when I took the MS drug Avonex that I had alot of thinning in my hair.  I am just guessing that it was caused by the Avonex.  I've never been sure.

Have you talked to your doctor about your concerns?

Again Daisy, I am glad that you joined us.

Best Wishes, Heather

What kinds of meds are you on ?   Interferon can cause hair loss . I was on it twice ( for hep-c)  the first time I lost a moderate amount hair, did not need to shave my legs ( the only perk) the second time was a combination rx. and I lost about 2\3 of my hair .  Yes I got those pity looks .  Especially one day when I got caught in the rain. Oh my !!  :)

I'm not dx.ed  I am not on one of the meds. for ms, so don't know the dosages (strength)   Someone with some knowledge be be by soon to give more help .  I just really wanted you to get a quick hello..

Take care     Stick around

Jo

I think it may be your meds.

I take depakote and dilaintin and I have been losing my hair every since. I means I have gotten afraid to brush out my hair for fear of how much I will lose when I do.

Talk to your doc, maybe he/she can change them around a little.

How is your thyroid function? Hair becoming brittle and falling out is a symptom of hypothyroid as well. Just a thought.
