Any "eye" deers?

As I've meantioned before my right eye is drooping and I have pain around it. I have just discovered something. If I cover up the left eye the pain around my right eye eases immediatley. Uncover it and it comes back.

I don't really have a problem seeing but it takes a tiny while when changing my focus from one thing to another for it to be completely sharp.

Any ideas folks? (sorry about the title)

OK optian says eye's are fine it is the nerves causing my problem. try to get an earlier appointment with neurologist. (I have been trying to no avail). So that's the first step done.

Here is one more eye-deer for you ....

when you are in the opthamologist's chair, be sure and ask them to check for dry eye.  It won't be the cause of your droopy eyelid, but it can contribute to the discomfort and itching.

Many of the drugs we take can cause dryness and that includes the eyes.   I'm not saying at all that this is the cause of your problem, just that it is something that should be factored in.

good luck with your plan, Lulu

Thank you so much for all your help.

I now have a plan.

I'm not scheduled to see the neuro for another 4 weeks there seems to be no chance of getting in earlier than that, but I will ask him to refer me to an neuro opthamologist, when I see him. I do have a a general medical assessment on Wednesday when I hope they will  do the blood tests that have never been done.

In the meantime I have booked to have an eye appointment as I am due one and they are quite a comprehensive in there examination over here in the UK. I have spoken to them on the phone and explained the situation and they quite happy to go ahead. I have no intention of buying any glasses that might be prescibed as things are obviously changing and not settled. if they can identify a problem I can meantion it at the general medical assessment.

I am sure the problem will still be there when I see the neuro as none of my symptoms have ever dissappeared. Only twitching has calmed down somewhat but never gone. I will try to meantion MG without looking like I've been internet digging as we know neuro's have an allergic reaction to this, having said I think mine know just how desperate I am and would be surprised if I hadn't googled!

So that's my plan of action. what do you think.

Your droopiness in your eyelid and the weakness in your eye muscles can point to an MS diagnosis, but will not show an abnormal result on a VEP. A VEP has more to do with the optical nerves. This problem that you are having has more to do with cranial nerves. It might show up on a MRI..but I'm in the same boat as you. I'm undiagnosed and took a picture of the eye deviation so I would have proof of the event. I see it as building as much evidence as I can, so that the doctors can figure this all out.

Your best bet, is to go and see a opthamologist or neuro opthamologist. If your doctors haven't done so, make sure that they have eliminated MG (Myasthenia Gravis), because this is a MS mimic and one of the hallmark symptoms of MG is a droopy eyelid and eye muscle weakness. I was tested for this and it was negative, so this could be an outcome for you. I see it as one more disease that they can't say I have, and it just brings me closer to the right diagnosis. MS is a diagnosis of exclusion..they have to eliminate all other possible diseases.

Kerrie- It sounds like you are have a similar issue..but I'm not sure why you are having the swelling, unless your cranial nerves are maybe getting so inflamed from the attack, that maybe, that is the cause. If you re-post your question and start a new one of your own, you'll get more help from the forum, and maybe more answers. I would almost bet that your cranial nerves are taking the brunt of this flare, and you are getting inflammation in your face from it..but I'm no doctor. I would repost your question, and maybe Quix may answer. She would know more, and this is a guess on my part.

I have had the problem of my right eye being droopy, my eye and right side of my face twitching, and the whole right side of my face being swollen for 5 days now, I went and saw my MS Specialist and she said that the twitching and the drooping is probably from the MS but shes not sure what the swelling is from. I can't put my eye patch over my right eye because for some reason when looking out of my left eye it looks as if I have been looking at the sun for a minute and there are dark spots. I don't have optic neuritis or glaucoma. I am going to try the trick of covering my left eye and hopefully strengthening my right eye, Does anyone have any idea if the twitching could be causing the swelling? Or is my face just freaking out? I look like a lop sided marshmallow. It's REALLY annoying! I couldn't go to my 4 day MS Mountain getaway today because of this. I can't do anything but lay in bed and get on the computer for a little bit. Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks,
Kerrie

You need to be seen my an ophthalmologist, preferably a neuro-ophthalmologist.  I hope you are able to get an appt soon.  Perhaps if you call your PCP, they can give you an immediate referral over the phone, instead of having to see him/her?

Has any doc seen the droopy lid? Take a picture so u can show them at your visit, if it goes away before then.

Well it started at christmas when I could feel something, but not really painful. The lid started to droop at the same time but it has got progressively worse and is now really quite painful. It is stopping me driving as I can not maintain my eye line. the drooped eye lid is really obvious now too .

I think your right when you say it is the eye trying to align that is causing the pain.

I had thought of going to have my eyes tested. I think to see another specailist I will need to go through my neuro as in the UK there is a system of referral. I don't see him for another 6 weeks. I do have a general medical assessment next week so I will see if that consultant can do anything.

I have no Dx yet, would this problem give me a positive VEP if tested? It is one of the few tests I have not had.

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

How long have you had this issue? It might eventually resolve,...hopefully.

My eyes have experienced weakness (in the left). It was so bad one time that the deviation was apparent to everyone. When this happens, I do get an achiness from what I believe is the eyes trying to align. Even if there is a slight misalignment in them, it can effect the way you see, or can cause the pain, at least from my experience.

My eye muscle weakness came on in 2008, but comes and goes. It will sometimes last months, or as little as hours. Sometimes I will have daily problems out of it depending on my fatigue level/ eye use.

I would contact a good opthamologist or a good neuro opthamologist for an evaluation. I hope they can come up with some ideas for this issue for you.

Thanks for your responses.
I think the muscles of the right eye are finding it hard to co-ordinate with the muscles of the left eye. If that makes sense. So when I cover the right eye it can do it's own thing.

Unfortunatley this is not something that comes and goes. When I wake up in the morning I get about 5 mins when the pain is very mild after that the pain set in for the day and by 5pm I just sit with my eyes shut when I can. I find looking down is more comfortable than looking straight ahead which I find impossible for anything more than a few minutes.

Hi there, once in awhile my right eye will act up and get achy behind the eyeball, light sensitive and when I move it it is sore.. this will last for weeks then be gone.

I will have double/blurry vision at this time and when I cover one eye the pain will subside, I have mentioned it to the Dr, but I should mention it to the Neuro Opthomologist.  I haven't been Dx with ON..

not sure what this is or why it happens.. if anyone else has an idea... let us know

thanks

Hmm... maybe wear an eye patch?  It sounds like your eye is weak, and the other eye is compensating.  Have you tried covering up your right eye?
