Attack of Count Flatula

Ok so this is a very embarassing topic for me to talk about but I thought I would put it out here.

As most of you are aware, I am in the middle of a flare. I just finished the solu-medrol and am just waiting out the rest and hopefully it iwll be over soon.

Anyway, I am having this issue with not being able to hold my gas lol!! Wow this is embarassing but guess I can pretty much talk to you all about anything right? I have never never passed gas in front of anyone but my kids and now I can't keep it in. It is embarassing and I do not go anywhere for fear of letting loose.

I can be walking down my hallway and toot all the way. How do I talk about this, I am just sitting here typing and I am embarassed.

I have also been having a problem with urine leakage, it is driving me crazy and I can't wear pads, well haven't found any that I can wear they all break me out....ha ha ha I guess I get diaper rash lol.

So is this all due to the flare? Can I really walk around farting all the time? Man this sure does bite, I hope it goes away and soon. Should I expect it too or is it here to stay?

Thanks for reading and not listening LOL!!!

Count yourself lucky if this symptom "passes" with your flare.  I have had these same  unfortunate symptoms result from a string of 6 surgeries for a peri-rectal abscess and resulting fistula.  I can't cough or sneeze without farting!!!  Luckily, the women I work with know all about my medical issues, and if things get too loud we usually just laugh it off!!

There is a great probiotic made in Madison, WI called "Florjen"-we stock it in the pharmacy I work at (in the fridge).  They have a product just for balancing intestinal flora-Florajen 3.  You can check with your local pharmacy or try to check their website; florajen.com.

Anyway, good luck and keep your sense of humor!!

Be well!

I am happy to say that it is starting to get better. I do have more control of it now than I did last week. Some still slip out but for the most part I can keep them in again. I have to admit I was getting worried though lol.

I just can't imagine running around like that all the time. That would definately confine me to my home.

It is nice to know that I am not alone and I probably won't mention this to my neuro cause it is just too embarassing to talk about lol.

You are right pets are wonderful and love you no matter what :)

Wow, I'm really glad you brought this up cause I have been having this problem especially since the IVSM.

I have thought about Beano but I'm not sure I believe in it. I will definitely try the probiotics. Its extra stinky and if you fart in the bathtub it is extra extra noxious. I guess its a chemical reaction.

The good thing about dogs is they love you regardless of you farting on them. my dog likes to sleep right between my legs and when I fart on him he doesn't even move, and its not cause hes in a toxic coma. He just loves me that much!

Hi there,
thanks for making me laugh, sorry not at you but just peoples comments and the visuals. I have the same problem and I was worse in a flare and it did settle down, it might be the cortisone as drugs do effect us.

I too was worried about if I had lost muscle control there as I have numbness in the whole area to some extent... but it did settle and for me foods do make it worse.

My now son in law come around to ask if he could marry our daughter and much to my horror as I got up out of the chair to grab a glass of wine to celebrate him asking my husbands permission I let the biggest loudest fart rip that is possibly known to man kind, I was so embarrassed I wanted to die! And it was so foul smelling it smelt like I had died!!  I have always been a windy person so to speak, but I think it is either my drugs I am on or the food I eat or maybe I am just lose, but it's worse in a flare.
Nice to know I am not alone, I toot down the hall all the time, but oh well there is worse things, I guess!!!

Cheers,
Udkas (thanks for sharing)

Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. I also wondered if it had to do with losing control down there. Or if it eventually lead to complete loss of control.  Like if it was the beginning of things to come.  I am exactly like what you said.  I would never intentionally do it in public.  I have never asked my nero, too embarrassed. I am quite sure I never will.
Anyway, I hope we both eventually find the answer to our questions.

Here's to a quiet Christmas.

Sending empathy, and seconding the fact that you can get probiotic capsules with the same gut-loving bacteria without consuming yogurt. Have you tried lemon ginger tea for the nausea/general stomach ickiness?

Best,

Hey, you know that you can get probiotic capsules which have the same live culture that's in yogurt.  It's great because then you don't have to eat the yucky yogurt.

I've suffered from weird gas on and off for a while now.  Sometimes it just seems like I'm... well... farty!  Other times I'm constipated, and other times I have the runs.  I don't know if it's what I'm eating, or problems with my colon, or what.  The worst one is when I'm all bubbly inside - not farty, but gurgly.  Disconcerting and uncomfortable!

Lulu,

LOL I know it is very normal and yes I know that when I sleep the gas flows but this is different. It is like I can't stop it from excaping like I usually do. Maybe it is just cause of the solu-medrol or the flare. Either way, I guess I am just going to have to live with it ;)

Bob,

Thanks for the info. If it doesn't let up soon I will talk to my neuro about the flagyl to see if I can get some kind of control. I just wasn't sure if maybe this attack wasn't hitting a nerve that controls the muscle to hold it in lol, I know that sounds funny but you know MS and it can attack any and all nerves, but I am not real sure if there is a nerve for lack of force to hold gas in lmao

Beano is a enzyme that is supposed to prevent the bacteria in your large intestines from producing gas.  The problem is you still have to get to the antacid section of your pharmacy or grocery to get it.

Since your immune system is suppressed by the IVSM, you can have a bloom of normal intestinal flora that can cause this.  The doctor that prescribed your IVSM may prescribe Flagyl to put you intestines back in order.  If you do take Flagyl, it is important that you take a probiotic to get things reset correctly.

Paula, this reminds me of an elderly friend of my sister's who proudly proclaimed that her husband had never heard her fart.  All I can think is she has never heard herself asleep.  Flatulance is a normal occurance and we all do it, and we do it multiple times a day.

But I do understand what you are talking about - for me a lot has to do with the food I am taking in.  Many people find dairy products increase gas.  Fiber definitely does.  And there is no way I am giving up cheese, ice cream or my daily raising bran.  It's a trade off - what is going to keep my constitution healthy vs gas.

I have found that I sometimes need to stop, really focus,  and stand still and allow the urge/pressure to dissipate if I am in a setting where farting is socially awkward (like at work!).

This is a universal problem - I wish there were a simple answer.

JJ,

Well I am glad you didn't really hurt yourself silly, and happy I can make you laugh :) I am trying to figure out if your muscle down there can be affected to the point that it is too weak to hold it. Maybe it is just the flare I am having who knows I just hope it leaves soon lol

Sumana,

I wish I could try the yogurt and lots of yogurt, the thought of yogurt makes me sick. I haven't liked it since I was a kid so I think I will try something differerent. Thanks though ;)

Tick,

No I don't get stomach cramps or anything I just pass and pass and pass gas lately. Hmmmm wonder if beano will help LOL

Wiggles,

Well at least I am not alone, it is just horrible. I have never passed gas in front of my DH and it will kill me if I do lol I am just so embarassed by it but what can I do.

Twopack,

Thank you I will go check it out now :)

Thanks guys,
Paula

I love your comment "can I really walk around farting all the time?"  LOL!

Well - if you want people around you the answer is probably no - but if you want to clear the room then I say go for it.  Why is it that men don't seem to think much of this  - I guess it's not considered "ladylike."  But we have the same bodysystems and sometimes they make noise.

I do have to admit - I am having the same issues - And why is it that each time it happens it sends me into a giggling fit?  How old am I?  5?  In the past - I NEVER did that and when it first started happening I was kind of amazed actually.  So far my timing has been pretty good - usually not happening in critical social events.

I have wondered if it has anything to do with MS?  Maybe COBOB would know. or Quix.

Have you increased your fiber lately? I know I get that same problem if I eat those fiber one bars. But it is exactly how you describe.
