Auditory evoked potentials

Auditory evoked potentials

After Quix's explanation of EPs, I'm wondering how many people here have had auditory evoked potentials done, if they were abnormal, and what the doctor told you about them.

Auditory are the only evoked potentials I had done (because of hearing/dizziness problems) and they were WAY-off-the-charts abnormal in both ears (not just the hearing-loss ear). This was in 2000; haven't had any more testing since then and I am not diagnosed with anything.

Had that test in '06, result was normal. Only thing abnormal was VEP.

I brain lesion in the a certain place could cause deafness in one ear in MS.

The Neurologist said in my case the BAER test was a waste of time for a MS diagnosis since I have a heredity condition that causes middle ear deafness. Ironically it comes from the same group of Europeans which they think the MS gene comes from.

Mine showed zilch.  Undx, still, too, so I'm sure pretty soon one of these guys will tell me it's all in my head.

Alex: So do you have hearing loss? If it's middle-ear deafness (otosclerosis?), can't they do surgery or something for that?

I know that doing a BAER is problematical if there is hearing loss. I am only deaf in one ear; the other ear has normal hearing, but the BAER was still extremely abnormal in that ear, too.

My deafness was caused by a couple of hard sneezes one day, so it could well be totally unrelated to my other symptoms (except the dizziness).

ABR doesn't seem to mean much diagnosis-wise, anyway. Apparently it can be very abnormal and still be practically meaningless, long as the MRI doesn't show a tumor.

PastorDan--hey, they HAVE to tell you it's in your head if they don't find another explanation. It's their job, don't you know? :)

I had the stapea replaced in my right ear in 2000 it works great. Because of health cost I can't afford to do the left especially now with MS and our insurance going way up next month.

I have a dalmatian who was born stone deaf and she is so happy. It no longer scares me.
Though I love music and have near perfect pitch in spite of the deafness.
