Avonex funding

Do you have to empty your 401k in order to get assistance for Avonex??

I read in one of my MS books, can't remember which one, that often, "middle income" patients DO qualify for income assistance from the drug companies because they do a comprehensive needs assessment (ie: don't just look at income but also all expenses including medical).  I didn't get the sense that one first needed to burn through their financial assets before being considered for funding, however it didn't explicitly say this.
