Cane or Walker?

Cane or Walker?

I'm not sure which one would do me better, or perhaps I do but I am thinking of aesthetics and a cane would be nicer.  I know the walker would do me better but I'm feeling like I'm labeling myself. It would certainly help me with my balance and distribute my weight more evening or help me favor one side so I can give the left leg a break from pain with weight bearing.

I dont know just think holding onto two handles while walking (like in a mall) would serve me better but then again perhaps a cane can do that too (not that I've used one before).

Maybe physical therapy would suggest something after they see me?

Hi, Lisa. Thanks for the kind words in your note.

Have you read Sho's thread about canes? That's a good place to start. And asking a physical therapist is definitely a good idea.

Sometimes aesthetics just have to go. This blasted disease takes things away from us, one at a time, and aesthetics are often the first. Having one's independence is more important though, so use whatever aids make you feel safe.

Have a good one,

Hello,
I use a cane most of the time and it helps a lot.
When I go somewhere where there is a lot of walking I use my walker.

I have a nice one with a seat so if I am waiting in l ines or somewhere without enough chairs I use the walker because I always have a seat.

I don't worry about what people think because I'd really feel like an *** if I fell.

Some days I don't need anything but that is few and far between.
The problem is I never know when a spasm is going to hit.

I bought a pretty cane with flowers on it so it's not so sterile looking.

Good luck.

The walker/cane dilemma seems to come after the giving up of wearing cute shoes.  It all comes down to our safety, which trumps looks.

I'm sorry to hear you are working through this choice, but please remember that these aids are often temporary.

Here's hoping that whatever you choose, it will quickly be standing the corner gathering dust.

Thanks you guys for responding.

I realize the aesthetics have to go.  Here I was a person 1.5 years ago who wore 5 inch heels and walked pretty good with them -- at least short distances ie: from car to restaurant, or car to bar.  Not that I went around walking miles in them, but when I went out to dinner or a bar where I would be sitting.  Now, I wouldn't dare wear even 2 inch heels (not my type anyways but oh well).  I just wear sneakers or flip flops for now.  Sort of ruins my wardrobe look and I hate to see my Blahnik's or Coco's just sitting there collecting dust.

I'll read Sho's thread on canes for sure! Thanks Ess for guiding me there.

I am going to wait for PT to see me and see what they think. I have a feeling they will say walker anyways.

Thanks again!

Lisa

I have to just accept that I wont be ever wearing high heels again.  Anyone wanting shoes in a 6.5 USA let me know. Heh.

Lisa, it's good that you can joke about it... Shoes seems like such a small thing to give up but it was too me... Since I'm in the chair most of the time it doesn't really matter what I wear but when I'm able to use my cane I have 2 choices... White or brown sneakers... I also have braces that I have to wear when I do walk so I'm very limited...

It definetely kills the wardrobe too... Who want to wear a cute black dress with white sneakers...lol  I guess laughter is the best medicine though... I was thinking about having a funeral for my shoes and clothes that I can't wear any more... Does anyone want to join me in a big bonfire? hehehe

Yes, it does kill the wardrobe, but to put things in perspective -- I suppose that is nothing.  However, when you lose so much in so little time all at once or even in bits and pieces -- I tend to want to hang onto something -- even if its materialistic such as shoes.

I'll join in on the bonfire! Haha

Oh Lisa,, I hear ya girlfriend!!!
As far as the cane or walker,,,, I'd say to use whatever protects you from hurting yourself.
I know how you feel as far as your pizazz, style, outgoing self.... to change what you are "able to wear" compared to what you really want.

Before I was sick and had 5 eye surgeries, I used to go to work, fix my hair just right, make up, nice clothes and wore a chunky heel to work (we weren't allowed to wear high heels) After the surgeries and out of work, I wear my hair in  a half twist pull up bun, and I wear my sandal slippers all day long! LOL

When I had to wear the eye patch (the pirate one) I wanted to design it with sequins or something just to make it look good because I felt sooooo ugly.  You are beautiful no matter what you use....cane or walker,,,  whatever keeps you safe!!!!!!

Don't throw away the cute shoes yet! I can't wear them when I walk, but if I'm riding in a wheelchair I sure can! So rent a scooter and wear a pair if 6" leopard pumps to the zoo ;-)

Oh Pammy Pam Pam!  We can both say, "Those were the days my friend!" Heh.

I'm going to wait and see what the PT will suggest.  I think not only when I have my limp and left hip feeling like its dislocated during spasm time, but for fatigue as well.  This way I can last longer in the "Mall" perhaps?  Maybe a cane would suffice for that as well, but the mere thought of the ability to "sit" when I want and not have to walk 200 yards to find  a bench to sit on to rest would be good too.  I don't know.  Decisions, decisions.

@Vidalouise: LOL @ the rent-a-scooter!  Hopefully no dizziness will surface so I dont run people over! Hahaha! Teasing.  Leopard pumps!  I got studs on my black leather 5 inchers!  Stilettos baby!  Perhaps with a pink fluffy fringe! ROFL!

Want shoes?  I get cute ones from alegria shoes - you can get them with free shipping and free return if you can't wear them.

I was turned on to them from Twopack and Michelle on a visit. My first pair was midnight garden, but I have to confess I am waiting for the delivery of pair #8 - most of them from their clearance choices.

They were designed originally for the nursing profession - they are a rocker that keeps me from having toe drop (impossibile in these shoes the way they curve up at the toe). They have a non-skid bottom.

My neuro has checked me walking in them and says they improve my walking.

These are euro sized - so if you are unsure of your size, call and talk to one of their reps.  They are great in figuring your size.  PLUS these can adjust to a wide width and/or fit an orthotic.

My friends laugh at me and say I am always p imping these shoes -but I swear by them.

some people have tried them and can't wear them but others have tried them and love them.  You won't know unless you try a pair or two!

Hi Lisa,

I use a walker with a seat I will use frequently when I either become weak or have been standing too long.  I have been instructed to get a cane but haven't because I feel like it 'looks' bad.  Plus, I can't carry things with it.  Using a walker with seat, you can place a shopping basket and put your items in that.

I didn't know you can rent a scooter.  It would be nice to go to the mall some day.

I hope that you get answers and find the best solution for yourself.

You know, I thought about it and I'm thinking the walker with the seat and handbrakes thing would meet my needs when it comes time to do an "outing" with the boyfriend whether it is an art and craft show, or going to the mall.  I just can't do it alone anymore and I can't last more than 5 minutes of walking without looking for someplace to sit.

I realize there are times I can ambulate without any issues such as balance or limping, but the fatigue is always there and to think I can hold onto something during this process, would be great.  Too bad I couldnt take the walker to the beach to photograph.  I could pop the camera in the basket and push it instead of carrying the heavy thing.

I go to PT on Wednesday -- so we'll see how I am by then.  Perhaps my left hip will stop feeling like its dislocated and my limp will go away.  I hope so.  I so need an endurance program. I think after 14 months of fatigue and laying around is quite debilitating.  I'm trying to do arm exercises due to muscle atrophy and it doesn't seem to be working yet.  I hope the PT's can help with that too.

Thanks for responding RedFlame

I started using a cane when I was 45 and felt like I not only was labeling myself but had a huge sign for all the world to see. I went to PT and they evaluated what was best for me. At the time I got tired but could keep going for a while. the cane helped with balance so I didn't tire out as fast. lest that is what PT said. then again, falling and hanging on walls isn't so graceful either.

I haven't tried a walker but have thought about it. it sure is true that you can't carry much with a cane. I haven't been to a mall in five years or even stores. I don't have the endurance to do that even with a cane.  my endurance is rather limited anymore. have thought about a wheelchair for getting out again, but it would have to be light.

work with the PT and find a way to keep doing what you enjoy.

Raz

@ Lulu, I've never dared try the rocker shoes. figured I'd fall faster. ha. but maybe one day i'll try some if i can return them if I can't walk in them.

Hey there! Long time no see!

Hope everything is alright with you?

Thanks for responding! Your input is greatly appreciated!

I just realized I haven't been to a Mall in 2 years since last week.  That's a long time.

I don't have the endurance either to walk in the malls.  I even contemplated on getting a wheelchair so my boyfriend could enjoy the Mall a bit longer.  He said "No, lets just go home."  It was nice to be out but as you know, outings are tiresome.

I think you should try a walker...why not? Think about holding onto something with both hands! You can lean on something while ambulating.  I think that would make a world of difference, don't you?

Plus you can carry things, such as:  Those rocker shoes you will never wear! Hahaha!
