Changing Gabapentin to Tegretol

by brin, Mar 06, 2009 09:36AM
Hi
Gabapentin doesn't seem to work so I am thinking of trying Tegretol. As both these meds need a slow build up and stoppng time do I need to stop Gabapentin before starting Tegretol?
Regards
Brin

Hello I don't think we have met so let me extend my welcome.  I think you will like it here.  There are a lot of knowledgeable and caring ppl here.

As to your question I haven't a clue.  I use Gabapentin and have had success with it.

I just wanted you to know ppl are reading your post and sooner or later someone will happen by with an opinion.

Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi and welcome,

I am not sure about the interchange between Tegrato and Gabapentinn , you would need to speak to your neurologist or pharmicist in regards to the changeover from one to the other.

I used to take Tegretol for pain and my neuro suggested Gabapentin because it was better tolerated (not as many side affects), I find lately that the Gabapentin isn't working as well either but I am going to see if I can increase my dose when I see him next.

I found Tegretol made me feel very sluggish/sleepy and I hated taking it, I think as far as effectiveness went the two drugs were about the same for me, but everyone is different and what works for one might not work for another. Tegretol did help my trigiminal neuralgia when I had that a long time ago..

Do seek professional advice on changing over even if you do have the tablets at home because these drugs can in some people cause adverse affects (best to be safe)..

Hope you get your pain under control

Cheers,
Udkas.
