Cyst versus Lesion

Cyst versus Lesion

Hi Forum Friends,
I did ask this question in the Ovarian Cysts section but didn't actually get a reply to this question.  After having all my testing done for my bladder issues when they did a transvaginal ultra sound they found a lesion according to the radiologists report.

My urologist called it a cyst but said it needed to be monitored so I was to have another ultrasound in 2mths time. He said I had a cyst on my right ovary. The report called it a lesion. So are they the same thing?

My Uro said it was most likely nothing to worry about but because my uterus is enlarged etc. he just thinks it should be monitored, he said it is not responsible for any of my current symptoms.

I am not worried about it because all my reading tells me that cysts are common for women my age etc. and they come and go but I was confused as to why it can be called a cyst and a lesion. Are these the same thing?

Thanks
Udkas.

I have ovarian cysts all the time usually they just resolve themselves. For me its polycystic ovary syndrome. It cause me to have more periods. It would be a problem if I wanted to have kids because it messes with fertility. I probably have them because I had my tubes tied and am a little over weight. Lesions on the ultrasound are not the same as MRI lesions. Many women have cysts and never know it.

Hi, I use to get cyst, on the out side, and always in the same spot after each baby was delivered, they always had to be lanced. OUCH!!
These are different from ovarian cyst in that the treatment is different.
For what ever reason, it seems that Doctors these days have taken to calling every thing a Lesion. LESIONS are Not Tumors, or Cyst, They are different in appearance and every thing else. So I have No Idea of why they are doing this. It is very confusing.to us patients.

Thanks for the info, I just didn't know if lesions are different from cysts.  I knew that they would be different from your MS lesions..

I think they do confuse us DJ.   I really don't think mine is anything to worry about, but was just confused with the different terminology and was unsure if it meant different things..

Wobbles that is exactly my question is the lesion the same as an ovarian cyst?

Oh well if anyone else wants to put their two bobs worth in please do?

Cheers,
Udkas.
P.S. I have finally awoken from my Endep trip.

Your Urologist is correct in calling it a cyst.A cyst is like a sack filled with pus or diseased matter whereas a lesion is the injury of the tissue of an organ that impairs that organs funtion.Everything is a "lesion" to a Radiologist..                Hope this answer helps , Docflick

I disagree with some of the posters above.

Lesion = something wrong, a difference in the tissue, "something is different" (this is a non-specific term that would include cysts, tumors, scars, plaques)

Cyst - a sac filled with something

Yes, a cyst can be called a lesion, but in describing something you want to be as specific as the test allows you to be.  If you see a smooth sac with something inside, then it is more appropriate to call it a cyst.

Well the report from the radiologist clearly states that it is a lesion on my right ovary and that my uterus is march larger than normal.  My GP called it a lesion but the urologist just said that I had a cyst on my ovary and he didn't think it was anything to do with my problems but should be re checked with another transvaginal ultrasound in a few months time.  I was just confused by the different terminology.

Thanks for the info.
