Does my stepson have MS symptoms?

My 18 year old stepson has been suffering from numbness of tongue for the past month.  Then, for the past three weeks he's lost control of his right hand.  It doesn't hurt, it just won't do what his brain tells it to do.  He can't write (he had to take his midterms in the form of oral exams).  About a 1 1/2 years ago he inexplicably permanently lost the hearing in his left ear.  He is an otherwise healthy 18 year old, although he has suffered a couple of concussions in the past two years (football) and he suffered from headaches since he was little, but these seem to be less frequent and, in fact, he hasn't had one in a while.  He is small, 5' 6" and weighs about 130 lbs.  What do you think?  Any idea what these symptoms suggest.  He is scheduled for an MRI this Friday (brain and spine).  Please let me know.  Maureen Childs

I have MS and have studied it thouroughly since being diagnosed.  Your description of the symptoms is not a typical presentation of MS.  MS usually will present with Optic issues or numbeness in the limbs.  Will resolve within a few weeks.  Complete hearing loss in one ear is not MSish and having a numb hand is more likely due to a pinched nerve or carpal tunnel.  Of course who am I to say.  Get a Nuerologist to check him out.

Hi there,
I have recently been diagnosed with Post Concussion Syndrome, and many symptoms mimic MS.  I also have hearing loss in both ears, since my early 20's.  Hmmm???  I hope he feels better soon.  Make sure you have a good neurologist examine him and look at all of his tests.  My neurologist says that some people suffer from concussions for over a year.  We have a doctor here in the forum named Quix, she may be able to help you with your questions.
Sincerely, Terrie

Welcome to the forum. I can't really answer your question, except to say it could well be related to the concussions, as well as a number of other things -  there are so many conditions that mimic MS.     There are folks in our little cyber family here who can answer your question better, but aren't around tonight. So I wanted to welcome you and let you know that help will soon be on the way! The MRI should help to shed some light, I hope. Hang in there.
