Driving and Neuro Issues

I am just curious as to who still drives themself and who has had to give up driving.

I am becoming some what afraid of having cognitive problems or my vision will go blurry or maybe a major muscle spasm in my driving leg while I am running errands in town.

I have all but given up driving at night entirely.

Please include how long you have been living with neurological sx's.

I was dx'd with MS in Feb 09 after a major relapse in Dec 08.  I would venture to say MS has probably been part of my life for about 16 years.

Although I drive myself everywhere, I've gotten some wicked spasms that have caused me to pull over and wait until they've subsided.  Luckily, vision problems aren't in my picture.

I have greatly limited my driving since June. I only drive short distances and do not drive at night. Dh has to take time off from work every time I have a dr apt. so he can drive me. I also don't like to drive the kids, I only do that if I absolutely have to, and only very short distances.

While I love to drive, I find that long trips exhaust me, mentally.  It takes alot of concentration to be a good driver. (Which I hope I am)

I no longer drive at night, as I become confused easily with the glare of headlights, especially on unfamiliar roads.  So I do not put myself in danger or anyone else and stay off the roads after dark.

Idrive locally, withing a 30 mile radius.  I do drive to cog training which is 70 miles one way but it is a straight shot.

I have to be careful driving that far because it is easy to zone out. My honey takes me to appts that are away appts.

As to night driving...it is 4 miles from here to wal-mart.  I can go through our little town (hardly any traffic) or down the four lane.  It is all very familiar to me.

If I go after dark I usually go through town.  The street lights cut the glare of oncoming headlights and I don't become confused.

I asked this question a while back because I did have one episode where I became confused/lost in an area I have driven twice a day for years and years.

I drive anywhere anytime BUT I am now leaving extra room to the car in front and have slowed down a little in traffic

My husband has been driving a lot lately due to my problems with double vision. The double vision seems to have gotten worse within the last year, so I limit my driving to when my vision is better, which seems to be few and far between, now a days.

I recently got back from a long trip to Virginia. I've always had night blindness but this time was worse. I would turn my head to get something, and then turn it back, and I would see tracers from the headlights. Fortunately, I wasn't driving at all.
