Elevated IGG in CSF?

Got my LP results today.  You may recall I've always had negative MRI's, yet been dx'd with MS since 1990.  Well, now they are SURE it's MS no matter what, because my latest LP showed elevated IGG proteins - whatever that means.

Can someone explain it to me please?  Thanks! :)

I WAS DX'D ON A CRITERIA THATS NOT STANDARD,AS IN THE MCDONALDS CRITERIA OR THE POSERS.

MY NEURO DX'D ME ON THE BRAIN ATROPHY AND SYMPTOMS AND RELAPSES.THE HYPER REFLEXES AIDED IN THE DX.PLUS THE LP SHOWED EXTREMELY ELEVATED MYELIN BASIC PROTEINS.

SINCE THEN THE VEP HAS CAME BACK WITH BELAYED RESPONSES ON BOTH EYES,AND THE SOMATOSENSERY TEST WAS ABNORMAL.

TODAYS DRS WANNA RULE EVERYTHING OUT FIRST WHICH IS GREAT,BUT THEY LEAVE TO MANY IN LIMBO AND THEN WHEN THIS DISEASE DOES MANIFEST IT LEAVES LASTING RESIDUAL DISABILITIES.

I WISH MORE NEURO'S STEPPED OUT OF THE TEXT BOOKS AND ACTUALLY TREATED PATIENTS.

WELCOME TO OUR FAMILY

I hope so too - I just said in another post I wish I could clone the guy.  If everyone had a neuro like him, life would be so much easier for people with MS.  Here's hoping your new one is just like him!

Nope - actually, I'm HAPPY with the positive results.  I've been on the negative test bandwagon for almost 20 years now - yet I've had full blown MS exacerbations all along the way - so my MS was more or less dx'd by symptoms and attacks alone.  I've been waiting a long time to finally "prove" I'm not just crazy. :)

I guess this proves that even after 20 years, you can have clear MRI's, yet eventually develop "stuff" in your CSF.  It's been a long time coming.

Hi, Patti!  I wish I could explain it.  I wish I knew.  I know that elevated  IgG in an LP is an indication of MS.  It could be the proteins are a byproduct of some off-kilter process, and an elevation in them means trouble.

I'm sorry.  It sounds like you may be surprised about the confirmation of your diagnosis.  Are you?  Is it because of the normal MRIs?  How great that you were diagnosed without MRI evidence.

Are you taking medication?

Wish I could have helped more!

Feel well,
