Employee Benefits/Continued Employment

The post "How did you decide to finally stop working?" is a good one and also brings up some side issues in terms of financial affairs that are important to consider.

Mike mentioned that he has LTD insurance through his company. Once I started developing sx, if ST/LTD coverage was available through my employer, I opted into the plan. My current employer does not offer this coverage. Ironically enough, my company's insurance agent asked if we were interested in catastrophic illness coverage; this was in a department managers meeting and I piped up that I was more interested in ST/LTD coverage.

If you have this option available to you through your employer and are dx'd or in Limbo Land, I highly recommend that you sign up for coverage. It is relatively inexpensive and you are not subject to the checks required if you tried to get an individual policy, which would be very expensive.

Other things to consider are health insurance coverage. You may be covered by COBRA for a period of time, but the premiums can be expensive and once COBRA coverage ends, you may be at the mercy of the insurance companies. We have yet to see how health care reform will play out and it does not take full effect until 2014.

There are a lot of other things to consider, however I am going to keep this tied into working and employee benefits and how the loss of a job might effect things.

Thanks for this Audrey. Definitely things we must consider or at least look in to!
