Fishyfish's story

1999 – While showering, I almost passed out due to heat and humidity.  At the time I thought we might have had carbon monoxide poisoning due to old dirty oil heater in our rental unit.  I recovered once I was cool again.  This reaction happens to this day (2007) when I get too hot from showers, baths, or hot weather.  I get dizzy, nauseous, and woozy.

July 2000 – Optic Neuritis in right eye.  Evaluated by an eye doctor.  Resolved itself in a few weeks.  I had an MRI at this time (no contrast) and primary doctor mailed me a letter saying there was no evidence of MS.

July/Aug. 2002 – Started getting tingling in my left arm while on vacation.  Resolved within a few days.  I did not see a doctor.

2002 – 2006 – Various times of tingling arms (almost always the left), resolving within hours or a day at most.  Nothing too major.  Not seen by a doctor.

November 2006 – Developed Raynauld’s symptoms in my fingers when cold.  Usually my right hand, rarely my left.

April 9, 2007 – Began getting “buzzing” and tingling in my right arm which was very noticeable and strong.  Also got to my left arm the next day.  Feels sort of numb and heavy.  Very distracting and bothersome.

April 13, 2007 – The tingling, while still in my arms, has now gotten to my right foot.  Over the next day or two, it gets into my left leg, and more heavily into my right (mostly feeling it in my calf and foot).  My foot feels rather numb on the top, especially my middle toe.  Other times it feels like it is cramped up and I can’t uncramp it, like my toes are flexed up in the air, even when they’re not.  Tests done today:  CBC (GHC), SED rate, Basic metabolic panel (BMP GHC) – all normal.

April 26, 2007 – New MRI, no contrast, head.  Neurologist says everything looks normal.

April 30, 2007 – Arms and feet still abuzzing!  At times I’m a clunky walker since my right foot feels rather numb, and numb feeling extends up past my knees a bit.  Got rather dizzy this afternoon, but not for too long.

May 9, 2007 – Another MRI, no contrast, cervical.  Neurologist says everything looks normal except normal wear and tear.

May 3, 2007 – more tests:  Insulin level, Fasting Glucose, Folate, HIV, RPR (Syphilis) screen – all normal levels, except for Folate level was high.  Neurologist emailed and said this was normal if I was taking multivitamins (which I am).

June 4, 2007 – EMG/NCS test on arms, legs, back and back of neck.  He said there was no nerve damage, but that I had “Benign EMG disease”, which he said was rare, but nothing bad to have.  He said it had nothing to do with my tingling.  He said it was more likely to be mild MS.

June 22, 07 – Update:  still have issues with my feet – mostly the right one.  My arms are normal now, but my feet still have pins and needles or feel asleep.  My right foot sometimes feels like it has a frozen bottle of water stuck through it.

July 10, 07 – Got a headache in afternoon, went away after taking Excedrin Migraine pill.  Started getting too hot making dinner, had to lie down to feel better (dizzy and nauseous).  Went shopping, got way too hot, started getting lightheaded, dizzy, and nauseous.  Vomited several times in store, went home.  Got progressively worse until I had to lie on the floor, still vomiting, my arms were paralyzed; heart skipped beats and had trouble breathing.  Taken by ambulance to ER.  Stayed there for several hours until cooled off and normal again.   I’ve had several heat related episodes before where I get queasy and dizzy, but nothing anywhere near this severe.

July 11, 07 – Had a regularly scheduled neurologist appointment this morning to discuss the EMG test.  My legs are feeling bad today – my feet are both tingly and numb, and my arms are on and off feeling tingly.  He discussed the abnormal findings on the EMG test saying that it usually accompanied things like muscular dystrophy, and that he was going to have another blood test done (Total CK – muscle enzyme test).  The Total CK test came back negative.

July 12, 07 – My arms are feeling back to normal today, but my legs are still feeling pretty bad.  My feet are numb feeling and cold, extending about to my knees.  It hasn’t felt this bad in quite a while.  My legs also feel weaker than usual.  I’m not sure if this was exacerbated by the heat problems I had, or just more of the same problem.

July 29, 07 –  After mowing the lawn, I came in and had a throbbing headache.  I took an Excedrin Migraine pill and tried to take it easy.  My headache went away, but I increasingly felt dizzy and nauseous.  It’s a strange feeling, like I can’t move my head or else my brain feels “sloshy”.  It’s rather like my eyes aren’t following as quickly as my head.  My arms were feeling weak again too, which scares me.  My legs have been a bit better today – the tingling is mainly in my feet, and not up my legs as it has been since the ER visit.

August 3, 2007 – Second Opinion - Neurology visit with Dr. *******, (recommended by MS Society).  He ordered VEP test and LP test.

September 4, 2007 – VEP test done.  He said both optic nerves tested normal.  New neuro did an LP test shortly after, and had blood drawn.

September 9, 2007 – Test results came back from LP:  VDRL (CSF), Protein CSF, Oligoclonal bands CSF, IGG Albumin/CSF, Glucose CSF, Cell Ct. & Diff – CSF.

September 10, 2007 – Neuro called with the test results.  He said he thought my symptoms were a “shade of normal” and to call him if anything serious happened in the future.

LP was normal, 0 - 1 Oligoclonal bands, nothing elevated.

Thanks!

Hola!

The LP results - were they normal or were the things you listed abnormal or positive in CSF?

Thanks!
